Look, we're all used to it by now: you get to a page you haven't visited before, and of course you first have to give consent to the page for storing (or not storing) cookies on your device, and of course you have to tell it you don't want their absolutely fascinating newsletter, and of course you don't want an account just because you visit one time. But wasn't life better before we had this, when we could immediately get to the content? It's been years, but apparently there is still no way for the browser to communicate our desires directly to the page, so it can skip those horrible popups.

Can we please have a cross-browser internet standard that lets browsers inform pages what we want, so that the page doesn't have to ask every time? Something like:

  • I'm ok/not ok with essential cookies
  • I'm ok/not ok with tracking cookies.
  • I'm ok/not ok with data traffic analysis cookies.
  • I do/do not want to sign up for your newsletter.
  • I do/do not want to create an account.
  • etc.

I wouldn't expect the internet to change overnight, but please give us the tools so that well-meaning websites can at least choose to reduce the amount of crap they push to you.
