Firefox Translations in Thunderbird

It would be great if #Thunderbird added support for the Firefox Translations add-on

The add-on could allow you to translate received emails you're viewing via a click of a button, or even translate an email you're writing into another language before sending.

The possibility of having access in your application to translate foreign messages into the language of the person receiving it, for example English into French, would be very useful.

There are very few addons on Thunderbird that allow the translation of emails and all of these, due to permission problems, can only open a separate window to show the translation of the text.

An integrated translator that allows you to maintain the formatting of emails while translating the text content would be an incredible step forward for software productivity.
If the same translator could also be integrated into the composition it would be even more useful.

I am still waiting for the translation feature within the email. Please let me know incase the development team has given up on that feature. I would need to move to another email client, since living in Japan and receiving lots of emails in Japanese, I do not want to miss that kind of best practice feature for any email client forever.

Dear community,

I'd highly require and support this feature using firefox offline translations. For this to realize, I suggest the following workaround as starting point, e.g. for realizing a macro likely or on base of ThunderbirdObsidianClipper.

Using Linux Mint works with the following, but probably on many other OSs too...

1st (in Thunderbird): - Mark text to translate (not select all!), right click, save as, create&select directory (e.g. documents/offline_translate/), remove ".eml" in suggested filename.

2nd (in Filebrowser): go to directory above, select original test file, right click, open with Firefox

Voilà: Text is opened and offline translated inline.

I obviously hope that this integration can be achieved as soon as possible, but in the meantime I suggest the good KDE Crow Translate application, which allows you to quickly translate selected text by opening it in a separate floatable window. https://apps.kde.org/it/crowtranslate/

Dear All, sorry I don't understand the problem, why this integration was predicted to be in TB at 2024 and now even 9 month after my suggested simple workaround ist still not existing?

It is in fact as simple as mostly nothing other could be by following this simple procedure, the rest is doing firefox on its own. And no it is no workaround for me like for many others to install any online tool like deepl or anythin other. My text is my private translation and not for anyone else - hope this is clear?

1st) I need a right simple right click menu e.g. "TranslateByFirefox using /tmp/translate.txt"
2nd) Safe the marked Text or raw email into /tmp/translate.txt
3rd) Open Firefox with this /tmp/translate.txt
The rest is pure Firefox magic when having just properly installed the required languages in advance. It opens this file and offline translates the marked text that was previously writen into this file.

Please explain my why this is a problem to include this as everything you require for it is already in place?

could maybe someone explain, why this feature with an extraordinary simple workaround was not included even after months of my last reply. It's all in place what is required for that and simply
a right click menu entry is required like e.g. "Translate2Firefox by ~/translate.txt"? that safes the
marked text into this file and runs firefox with it as input?

I don't understand why this could not be implemented in hours as its only a hand full of commands and FF-Translate is doing all the magic. It all fully automated yet, all right in place, nothing else to be done than installing the proper offline languages in FF and run it?

I fully support this idea.

As a Turkish user, I frequently receive emails in English, and reading them would be much easier with a built-in translation feature. Many Thunderbird users around the world receive emails in languages other than their native language, so I believe this feature would benefit a large number of people.

Having a one-click "Translate" button directly inside the email viewer would make reading and understanding emails much easier without requiring third-party extensions.

Privacy is also very important. Ideally, Thunderbird could support Firefox Translations for offline (on-device) translation, allowing users to translate emails without sending their data to external servers. For users who prefer the highest translation quality, Thunderbird could also provide optional support for trusted online translation services such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, DeepL, or LibreTranslate.

This would give users the freedom to choose between maximum privacy and the best possible translation quality.

This feature would greatly improve Thunderbird, making it even more user-friendly and competitive with Gmail and Microsoft Outlook while continuing to respect users' privacy and freedom of choice.

Thank you for your amazing work and for considering this feature request. I sincerely hope to see this feature become part of Thunderbird in the future.
