Customizable hotkeys

It would be great if there was a way to customize hotkeys.
Here's how I see it:
 * Have a about:hotkeys panel, with all actions listed, and already mapped shortcuts shown.
 * Whether these should be modifiable or not is up to the dev community, ideally they'd be.
 * When clicking on a hotkey field, ideally, there would be a capturing hotkey feature, or, before this, an AHK like syntax to define hotkeys (not as complex, something like: CTRL+H means this and MAJ+ALT+END means that...)

 * a restore to default button.
 * Done.

It can't be done with an extension because some function can't be accessed by extensions (I'm actually looking for a way to send tab to other device while browsing with TST.). Anyway, I believe this should boost productivity in a number of ways. You guys are devs, you know keyboards are faster than mice. 😛

On Linux Ctrl+W is a shortcut to delete the word just behind the cursor (like Ctrl+Backspace) which works on the terminal as well as most other native Linux apps, however Firefox also uses that for closing the current tab. Now if Firefox was using that shortcut for something more benign like opening bookmarks or whatever I wouldn't mind not being able to change it, however the fact that it's a destructive action is quite frustrating when I accidentally trigger it, so at least being able to disable the Firefox shortcut would be a boon there.

Allow reassigning keyboard shortcuts

Currently I can not assign Ctrl+E for Bitwarden extension to autofill the password, because Ctrl+E is used by Firefox.

If I press Ctrl+E it jumps to the address bar to search. I have never used this feature and would like to use this shortcut to autofill passwords instead. I did this for years now in other browsers and it became my go to shortcut that I don't want to change (I can not even chose a similar one because of the same issue).

Allow us to change any keyboard shortcut.

We are currently looking at all the ideas that are In review, In development, and Exploring more to see if there are updates to share with you all. Then the next step is moving the top Trending ideas further along in The Idea Journey. And this one is at the top of the list.

I am here because I am trying to switch back from a chrome based browser, but this limited functionality may force me to return to it. I don't know why this even needed to be requested. This is such an obviously needed feature that used to be able to be accomplished with a extension (Dorando Keyconfig) but since the "big change" those type of extensions no longer work. Please add this basic functionality. Being able to change *AND* remove keybindings would be excellent!

Possible workaround until it gets implemented in Firefox for shortcuts on Windows: In PowerToys (you can get it from MS Store or manually from MS) there is Keyboard Manager. In that you can remap shortcuts for specific application eg. In Firefox pressing Ctrl+E triggers Ctrl+Q.

The feature –mechanism and UI– already exists:

That just needs to be made available for application shortcuts. For all of them. I don't see any point in not letting users determine their own.

The only thing missing is the OP's point of having a “restore default” ability, but that should be a trivial addition. It would also benefit the extensions UI.

Also, while it's possible with addons to add some shortcuts for a subset of functions:

1. Only a subset can even be accessed by extensions (rightfully so, for security)
2. I couldn't find a recommended extension and those that I did find are task-oriented and each only touch a subset of the available subset
3. Extensions can only add, not change or remove
   • Some shortcuts are in the way and if the user doesn't need them, they are just annoying
4. Looking up the available shortcuts should be trivial from within the application and not require to look up some obscure web page that may or may not be outdated
   
   • Even MS Edge is slightly better by giving you the page if you search their settings for “shortcut”

And, after all, one of Firefox's strong points has historically been its customizability.

Recent update (v 108.0) introduces shift+escape to bring up process manger. This breaks discord, vim bindings in jupyter-lab (and probably other things), see here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1806272

It would be great if breaking changes like are done only after customization of the key bindings is implemented/possible.

I can't believe this isn't already possible. I was pretty much exclusively a Safari user for over a decade and only switched over about a month ago, so I've gotten pretty used to those hotkeys and context menu. I'm also disabled, so I really relied on those shortcuts. I'm pretty upset about it 😞 Fingers crossed for this in 2023

My standard way of navigating between the browser tabs include [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Tab] and [Ctrl]+[Tab], to move between adjacent tabs.

When I close the tab, I usually do it with [Ctrl]+[W].

Now, there are two things that sometimes go wrong for me:

(1) [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[W]
I click [Ctrl]+[W] while still holding the [Shift], which closes the whole window... reopening it is often annoying, as I have to reload all the tabs, plus I can often lose some data or have some stuff to restart or start anew...

(2) [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Q]
EVEN WORSE, if I do (1), but accidentally misclick on [Q] instead of [W]... it closes WHOLE browser then 😞

I almost never used these shortcuts intentionally, while I keep regularly misclicking on them from years...

They are not only useless for me, they are JUST HARMFUL !!!

Why after all these years there is still no option to disable some unthoughtful and badly desined shortcuts that are just annoying users and doing more harm than good?
What's the purpose of stubbornly forcing them on the people who don't want them? 😞

Wow, almost a year since this has been requested and has been in the top 3 "Trending Ideas". There seems to be plenty of time to make useless stuff like another way to manage extensions with more clutter in the addressbar but not for things that users actually want.

This is a must have feature! Chrome has an excellent implantation of this, a single page where you can customize native and extensions shortcuts.
