Description

I’m really enjoying the new Firefox Account Containers and Tab Groups features—both are extremely powerful for managing context and workflows. However, there’s currently no way to link these two features together.

I would like to request the ability to assign a specific container to a tab group, بحيث any tab opened within that group automatically uses the assigned container.

Problem Statement

At the moment:

  • Containers isolate identity (cookies, sessions, logins)
  • Tab Groups organize workflows (projects, tasks, contexts)

However, these operate independently. This creates friction when:

  • I open tabs inside a group but must manually select the correct container
  • I accidentally open tabs in the wrong container within a group
  • I want a consistent “work context” per group (e.g., Work, Personal, Admin)

Proposed Solution

Allow users to:

  • Assign a default container to a tab group
  • Automatically open all new tabs in that group within the assigned container
  • Optionally enforce or prompt when opening tabs that don’t match the group’s container

Example Use Case

Work Group → Work Container

  • Opens company apps (M365, Jira, Admin portals)
  • Always uses work identity/session

Personal Group → Personal Container

  • Opens personal email, banking, social media

Admin Group → Elevated/Admin Container

  • Used for privileged accounts and admin access

This would create a seamless and predictable browsing environment.

Suggested UX Options

  • Right-click tab group → “Assign Container”
  • Tab group settings panel → dropdown for container selection
  • Visual indicator showing container associated with the group
  • Optional toggle:
    • “Force container for all tabs in this group”
    • “Warn if opening tab in different container”

Benefits

  • Stronger separation of identities and sessions
  • Reduced user error (wrong account/context)
  • Improved workflow efficiency
  • Aligns two major Firefox features into a unified experience

Additional Notes

This feature would be especially valuable for users who:

  • Manage multiple identities (work/personal/admin)
  • Use Firefox for development or IT/admin tasks
  • Rely heavily on both containers and tab groups
