Thunderbird can act not only as a mail client, but also calendar, address book, tasks app and more, which gives new productivity opportunities โ€“ for example, you can very easily convert an e-mail into a task or event. One of the things Thunderbird currently lacks, however, is support for sub-tasks/hierarchical to-do. Let me show you this amazing feature on an example (using Nextcloud Tasks):

On Bugzilla, this feature was requested 21 years ago: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194863

There are no good desktop apps supporting caldav and sub-tasks that I'm aware of, and the only such app for Android is Tasks.org. In addition, it seems Thunderbird already supports necessary attribute: https://github.com/Betterbird/thunderbird-patches/issues/79#issuecomment-1465267112

Cant wait to see a release for this. Just started using the caldav protocol recently for my families shared lists to escape the cloud. And I could not believe Thunderbird does not support this already. Glad to her its about to come.

Any update on when subtasks will be available / released?  Would love to begin using Thunderbird but am unwilling to do so without subtasks.

The Thunderbird PM provided an update on Mastodon:

Q: Any updates on this? ๐Ÿ™‚

A: not in the next ESR (due out in August-ish). Not sure exactly when, trying to figure out what all should happen in the Tasks section, as it is long overdue for some love.

Please consider the new caltext-task draft[1] in the redesign. Would be a shame if there was major work in redesigning only to just miss the new features.

Also joined just to upvote this idea. Sub-tasks are a must-have for me in any tasks app.

Great news!
Please make sure this works well with tasks and sub-tasks created with the following apps:
* tasks.org (https://tasks.org/)
* jtxboard (https://jtx.techbee.at/)

Thanbk you for suggesting this! I am so happy with Thunderbird being able to sync my calendar and tasks via CalDav. Works seamlessly with my android devices and NextCloud. It would make such a big difference if I could use subtasks, as I am also using tasks.org on my phone.

Let's see it the implementation takes the same time as the issue is open till now.

I hope it is faster. On my cellphone I also use tasks.org and jtxboard. Both are great apps and makes the task handling very productive.

Voicing more support for this feature.  It is a CalDAV feature supported by many clients, and it really feels like a big feature that is left out.

Just switched my todo list management to tasks.org and wondered why the sub-tasks didn't show as such in Thunderbird. It would be wonderful to have this feature, since the integration of todos is already quite nice (e.g. converting a task to appointment or email etc.).

@jevangelho @Jon

Hi,
It has been more than 2 years since Ponda's proposal was accepted. I look forward to the update.
Currently, subtasks created in jtx Board are treated as standard tasks in Thunderbird so they are not linked to parent at all.
