Add option to hide X from tabs on sidebar

After using the new tab sidebar for a while I have found that the X (close tab) button is annoyingly easy to accidentally click when attempting to switch tabs, especially when a volume button is covering part of the tab icon.

Could there be an option to hide the close button. I can still close tabs by middle-clicking on the icons or using a keyboard shortcut.

This is an accessibility issue as well, people with low vision shouldn't have controls appearing and disappearing on hover. It would be a much better solution to teach users on how to use middle click to close tabs. If there needs to be a close button, make it like the Windows taskbar -- the window preview has the close button -- so the tab preview should be where the button is placed and not on the already small target of the tab.

I often use my computer from a distance and i used to be able to avoid the 'play tab' and mute buttons by clicking on the left edge of my screen, now there is a huge close button there. So I would also like to remove that close button.
I think the solution jfftck suggests would be ideal but until that is finished it would be great to have a toggle in the about:config to hide the close button fully.

@AgentvirtuelI am a developer and understand how to use the userChrome.css to hide elements in the browser's chrome, but this issue is about making a user serviceable option in the GUI. The biggest issue with userChrome.css is that it depends on knowledge about CSS and what to use as the selector of the element to determine if the code you're using isn't malicious.

Vertical Tabs Sidebar: Option to Hide Close Tab X

The new vertical tabs sidebar is great! But now that the tabs are smaller, it's easier to accidentally close them by clicking the X in the tab corner.

Since we can close tabs with Mouse Middle Click, I would love the option to hide the X.

is there an option for this yet? I'm tired of accidentally clicking the close button, given the size of the total icon space and the close button, this happens too often and it is really annoying.

As mentioned, we already have options like middle click (which eliminates the icon space issue altogether, you just middle click to anywhere within the iconspace instead of some little x button which is on top of the actual tab icon, and can easily be missclicked.) and Ctrl+W  to close the tabs and most of the users are using these ways to close the tabs. There should be a setting at least in about:config to turn this annoyance off without messing with userChrome.css

tabs in vertical view are cool, but the cross for closing tabs...so many fat finger accidental close

How about a close button for the current Tab.

Even better, an option to change the close window X (right top corner of the window frame) so it only closes the current tab, but close the window if this is the last tab (unless you have selected not to close the window when closing the last tab).  And yes - it would be nice to turn off the close tab Xs (particularly when shown in vertical icon mode).

Also - the close Xs should be in the same place in both Icon and wide mode for vertical tabs (Preferably always on the right - and always visible).   The "new tab" tab - should always be at the top of the list (maybe an option to hide that as well).

I definitely like the vertical tabs.  Would like to see a vertical menu bar as well.

@paulfmIt isn't good to change the behavior of existing controls, especially ones that are standard to the OS. As far as where to place the close button, place it on the tooltip and make it where the mouse can hover over it--something like the Windows taskbar, you hover over the icon and there is a tooltip with a close button in the top corner. I have a mock-up that I could add, but don't have permission to paste it on this comment.

Move the Close Button to Tooltip  linking the idea that I created that has the mock-up of the vertical tabs. This design could be added to horizontal tabs and have an option to display tabs as icons only and reuse these tooltips for them. Firefox needs to have unique features and this could be useful for some users.
