Too Many Firefox Processes

I have one Firefox window open, with two tabs, yet I have 48 Firefox processes running, using between 12 MB and 350 MB of RAM each, with all instances of Firefox using a total of about 1.5 GB of RAM.

WTF!?

All browsers run multi-process now. 1.5 GB of RAM is actually quite little, so don't worry about it.

Firefox splits its work into many small parts and each part runs as its own process. This helps keep tabs safe fast and stable. Add ons videos and background tasks also create extra processes. Each process uses some memory. When they all run together the total RAM use can become high. This is normal behavior and helps stop crashes and freezes.
