Thunderbird 115.2.3 horrible layout

abrj76
Making moves

My Thunderbird-instalations was updated to 115.2.3 the other day. The layout is several steps back, hard to read, small fonts, and unlogic placement of menus and so on.
It's impossible to see how many new mails there are in the new bullet-thing that indicate how many new mails there are.
The fonts are to small
The menu-lines are to small and narrow and unlogic placed.
This design looks like it was made in the mid 1990's from a home-programmer.
I'm sorry, but this is not the way to go.

Thanks for this hint. I lookad at everything under Tools... Settigns and did not find a way to change this there. I wish I could change to the same font as in the previous version too (what font was used?).

A very big thank you to all who have responded to my comment from a few days ago! The "burger menue" on the upper right side offers indeed options to improve the layout somewhat, but I still don#t understand the purpose of the changes and don't see them as improvement.

I truly hope that Mozilla listens to all its users and fixes Thunderbird! It is terrible!!

Well I believe the "fix" is to scrap 115 as a fail and go back to 102 which  was a superior product that needs NO fixing. I am totally struggling with 115 but I cant go back because the code is rewritten for 115.      Hey Mozilla are you reading the comms?

To go forward  we must go backward.

You can probably cover all issues of the day with that statement huh?!     smile.

I completely agree. I really really hate this new Thunderbird. Am considering finally giving in to peer pressure and switching to (UGH!) Outlook.

There is a new European fork of Thunderbird being developed by a separate group and they call it BetterBird. It does seem better than Thunderbird 115 although they use the same version number. At least the Menu Bar is in the right place at the top. There is a portable version if you just want to try it. My concern is that there will be no security updates for version 102.

Amen!  and it appears impossible to change.  Was anybody thinking? paying attention?

I don't like how you can't download messages from one email address, you can only download from all of them. This is quite bad if your email server blocks you for too many requests.

Here's a thought on reverting back to 102.  Bring up thunderbird and copy ALL emails from your accounts that you want to keep to your desktop or usb or wherever. Go download thunderbird 102 and after uninstalling 115 (make sure to keep a list of id's and passwords for each account) install 102 and copy all your emails back to thunderbird. Personally, I use thunderbird portable and have it ask before updating.  You can get a copy of thunderbird portable on portableapps.com

They take that over and automatically "update you" to force the change.

I'm still on 102. Just set update to let you choose and it won't automatically install them.

What bothers me even is the sheer hideous waste of space on that search bar up the top.  All of the other stuff was bad but I thought I could handle it..but this just shows an basic lack of understanding when it comes to UI design.
First Firefox, though that's easy enough to customise but now I have to do with it Thunderbird too?  Who is making these decisions?
I think I'm going to switch over to Betterbird.  No more regressions in terms of features, no more "removing submenus" touted as an upgrade.

Overall I agree 100% with the posts here; it's a horrible update and utterly stupid in changed appearance. I've found that you can mitigate the damage slightly as follows:

Look just to the right of the search box at the top and you'll find a pull down (three bar) menu. On that you'll find options for "Density" and "Font size". Adjusting these helps with the problem of the menu bars being too thin and the font too small.

I agree. It seems like a buggy beta version. When I go to my inbox , each time I have to scroll through all the old emails to get to the new ones. Plus all the other bugs mentioned above. I am not even sure how this got released.

iT IS VERY NON FUNCTIONAL, HARD TO USE, IMPOSSIBLE TO FIGURE OUT, THINGS YOU NEED ARE NOT AVAILABLE OR WORKING RIGHT,  IT SAYS MESSAGES ARE THERE BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THEM,  TO SEND MAIL IS ANOTHER PAGE!!!  AND  THE MENU BAR FOR MAIL TAKES UP ONE HALF OF THE PAGE AND SO THEN YOU CAN ONLY SEE THREE LINES OF THE TEXT YOU ARE WRITING IF THAT, THERE IS NO WORD WRAP SO THAT RIGHT SIDE TEXT TOTALLY DISAPPEARS,  SO MANY THINGS THAT NOW YOU CANNOT DO AND SO MANY THINGS TO DO YOU CANNOT, AND IT HAS LITERALLY DISABLED MY WORK, AND THEY COP AT ATTITUDE LIKE WE ARE STUPID, AND LIKE WE HAVE HOURS UPON HOURS TO GET INTO THEIR HEAD!  THIS THING WAS NEVER TESTED, FOR IF IT HAD BEEN, THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN NOT TO PUBLISH IT.  iT REALLY SHOULD BE ILLEGAL WHEN THEY GAIN OUR TRUST AND THEN MESS IT ALL UP!  THEY REALLY SHOULD GIVE US A CHOICE OR A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE OLD VERSION INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BULLY US  INTO THIS NIGHTMARE OF A DISASTER.  iT'S AN UNBELIEVABLE MESS UP!  i AM NOT SURE WHAT THEY THINK THIS IS FOR, BUT MAIL IS NON FUNCTIONAL NOW!

is your keyboard broken as well ?

Ha ha ha!   NO, it's not, see?

They are having to pin the posts there are so many complaints!

My word! I am not at all reluctant to change habits. I would gladly make the effort for something better, but not for this unwieldy operational accident of a layout.

The "Retrieve" button now only allows to retrieve all email accounts. So if I just want to quickly download an email that sends me a code for another website, TB retrieves all 7 of my accounts, and each one takes much longer than with the old version. This is total rubbish.
I have many folders and subfolders into which the emails are sorted by filter as soon as they are downloaded. Recently I have to keep all the subfolders open all the time to see the blue flags for new incoming mails. The collapsed main folder only shows the unread emails, but not the new ones. Is there now a competition to make work more difficult or is the team playing a joke?

I have been working with TB for ages but never encountered such an unnerving change. I am honestly searching for an alternative. It's not Outlook, otherwise it would be easy.

I wish they cared, but it's pretty obvious they don't!  I've gotten LOTS of agreement on how bad it is now, but they will just delete or ignore that.

It makes me mad, it makes me even more sad.  It's a wreck to our lives and they just think we are worried over nothing since this is their HOBBY.

I cant believe how horrible this update is.

Here in Italy this update it's just arrived and...NO. I cant literally fine anymore my working emails, my bills subfolder...never seen a worst update for a software.
Isnatly reverse to 102.51 (thanks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7f5CjeJQww )

Thunderbird 115 broke many commonly used shortcuts and features. This video covers how to revert Thunderbird back to version 102 and to prevent auto updates in the future All links are available on the written guide: ...

Just awful. Cant get the hang of it at all . Just cant make it perform even simple tasks. Had Thunderbird for years but another stressful day with it then I'm going back to Gmail.

I was fed up with it. So many people have been complaining here for months and the developers are laughing up their sleeves. I gave up complaining and installed Betterbird.

The first time you open it, don't use the link. Write betterbird.exe -p in the command line, then you can connect it to your actual TB profile.

Looks like Thunderbird with bugfixes, menu is back where it belongs. You can retrieve from indicidual accounts again. Layout still doesn't win beauty awards, but retrieving emails is much faster. Quite a good compromise.

I am also not satisfied with the new layout, I prefer table list for my mails, who really uses card view?
And I agree that the font is too small and the line height too.

Why can't we adjust this? I could not find any options.

It really took me some time too find the view options for the folder navigation pane, the 3 dots
and yes, I reverted your default bad view back to ALL folders, and not grouped, thanks for this option.

Update account: And for the ones who still don't know, you need to right click the cloud icon to get the list your mail accounts to select a single one.

WHY do you need to change everything? It is such a bad habit of developers - just for the sake of changing something which the users didn't ask for.
And not to giving people options to revert or choose different layouts is not userfriendly.

If you add new features, great, but - add -them, and leave the rest as it was.

Thanks for this thread. Was automatically upgraded to "Supernova" as well...and found it horrid, even after changing the density.  Search bar at the very top? WTF??

Late to this as I was traveling and hadn't used this home machine for a few months - when the upgrade happened for most.

I've downgraded back to 102 as well. Thunderbird user for many years.

Must always ask before making a major change.   I keep denying Windows 11 upgrade as well. I know there is a way to stop that...I need to do that.

Thunderbird allows users to customize the interface. Go to the settings and preferences you can adjust font sizes, and menu styles, like I've done for Names Haven, or other elements to better suit your preferences.

Joo, it goes in that case, if you are english spoken and IT-person. That "Old"-version was easy to update.

And remenber that there is older people age 80 to 100 years old !

I agree I hate the UI and because of Security I will have to drop the Thunderbird as right now still stuck on v102 because nobody has made any type of hacks to get back the old UI. So that means I will drop it and go to Outlook it is a sad day when Outlook looks better than Thunderbird!

Developers just have to keep screwing up with new graphics that take away functionality for ugly user interfaces! Before Thunderbird was a legitimate email that could be used in a professional environment for work and home now it is trash that I would not let anyone see me use it at work or home! They just keep effiing up the UI ruining a classic program!
