Subject field wasted realestate

I note the other columns of the message window have the text hard left aligned, but the subject column has all text indented. This gives quite a bit of wasted realestate space that is at a premium.

This area is dedicated to icons for forward, reply, etc

Why not have a dedicated column for those icons?
