Smart Window expands to France, with Mistral as a new model option

Hi everyone! Following last month’s updates, we have more Smart Window news: Smart Window Beta is now available in France, with French-language support, and we’re introducing Mistral Small 4 as a new recommended AI model.

Mozilla and Mistral’s partnership is built on a shared idea: AI should keep the web open to competition and choice. Bringing another open-source model alternative into Firefox puts that idea into practice.

What’s new:

• Access in France: You can now try Smart Window Beta in French.
• Mistral Small 4: A fast, private AI model trained with local context, recommended for Smart Window users in France, and also available as an option in the U.S. and Canada.
• Continued model choice: Mistral joins the other models available in Smart Window. You choose which one to use, so you’re never locked into a single provider.

Smart Window remains fully optional. You decide when to use it, what browsing context to share, and which model works for you.

Guys, generating alt text for blind/low vision users is great. Local, on-demand translation is not a bad idea. But this LLM chat bot integration? Complete waste of time and money. Only some techbros want it, soon enough the AI bubble will pop and this will join things like FirefoxOS and VR. Don't fall for sunk cost fallacy, just drop it now.

French user with Mistral Model, Windows 11, some Add-ons.

• The up and down arrow keys don't move cursors in text input box.
• The font sizes are too small. I usually use 150% zoom on most web pages, but here I had to go up to 200%.
• The toolbar buttons cannot be moved.
• The "Ask a question" button should be removed and included in the menu of the other button that enables "smart window" mode.
• I find the behavior of locally stored memories unclear. The first time, I told the model about the video games I was playing. I thought it would remember them a few days later, but it didn't. Does the memory concept not cover that? Do you have to avoid ever switching back to "non-smart" mode?
