Previously, I was able to pick a search engine with Alt + Up/Down keys. This shorcut is still mentioned on 'Keyboard shortcuts' page, but it no longer works. Now, the only option to change a search engine is to click on a dropdown menu or start typing your keyword, like '@dd'.

Of course, it's not the answer expected, nevertheless, you can try this option, the Search bar to your toolbar https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-search-bar-firefox-toolbar

Experienced the same and I didn't like it. As far as I understand the shortcuts ALT + arrow up/down were removed from address bar, but stayed in search bar. Why someone needs two separate bars for address and search when the address bar can be used for both? Maybe someone searches for sites (not for words)... So either you have to downgrade your Firefox's version or just add the search bar next to the address bar by customizing toolbar. In the last case you can use ALT + arrow up/down keys in search bar. The quick method for search will be ALT + D and TAB (or double TAB).

I agree, this change is really annoying, I'm used to typing my search terms then using arrow keys to search on Wikipedia, Ebay, Google etc., all without moving my hands from the keyboard. This unnecessary change adds extra effort to do such a basic thing.

I am so sad that the keyboard experience was yet again completely ignored when designing "a smarter, simpler Firefox address bar" introduced in Firefox 138.
As it is now, search got a lot worse in Firefox, with mouse clicks required to change search provider. 😣
I am assuming the Mozillians are all mouse users...
Pressing Option + Up / Down should scroll engines / open unified search button
