I am sure this is related to questions others have had, but my searches were unsuccessful. Updating Firefox on MacOS often askes me for the system password in order to install a helper. The dialog box says nothing about what it's installing, which is a problem. Usually I cancel and ignore it. This time I entered the system password, and it installed a background process that runs as a MacOS login item. OK, but what is it? What is it doing? I can turn it off (I did, but then Firefox got confused so I deleted and reinstalled), but the information about the login item says nothing about what it is. This is horrible, in my opinion. Why should I allow something to run in the background with no simple way of getting inforamtion about what it's doing?
To be clear, one question is: What is this login item doing?
The more important point is: Information should be provided about what is being installed. The program should at least have an informative name listed in the list of login items. And when one has to enter a password to install it, information should be provided about why.
If MacOS won't allow Firefox to add information about what's being installed this in the dialog box that asks for the system password, how about a workaround? e.g. rather than telling MacOS that Firefox wants to install something that needs the system password, delegate to another program with an informative name, so that the MacOS dialog refers to something like "Firefox Update Checker Installer" or "Firefox Bookmarks Sync Installer", or whatever is appropriate. Or maybe even give the delegated program a name like "Firefox Installer (see https://shorturl for info)".
Thanks! I've just been little bit frustrated. The mysterious dialog box keeps happening, and now I have a mysterious background program to worry about. (Although it's not there now, after I reinstalled Firefox--now v 139.0.1 on MacOS 15.5.)

These tasks appear in System Settings under "Login Items," but sometimes they are listed with generic or unclear names, making it difficult to identify their purpose.
