Not this bottom controls business again - suspending my use of Android Firefox

DavidBE
Making moves

I've been using Firefox desktop since it was Firebird, and Firefox Android since I first got a smartphone, apart from a gap when you messed up with the Firefox Preview early version of the current Android Firefox - which you have now done AGAIN.

Don't you ever learn? Why is it that devs always think they have to do something new and shiny, and change something without any memory or thought that things are the way they are for good reasons that remain good reasons?

In the early Firefox Preview, you jumped on the fad for bottom controls with a bottom address bar and bottom-opening panel instead of a top opening menu. I was one of the many who then stopped using Firefox Preview and told you I would NOT be using Android Firefox unless and until top controls were restored, and as I like the integration of using the same brand browser on phone and Windows laptop that would mean dropping desktop Firefox too. You first gave an option to move the address bar back to the top, but still with a bottom opening panel instead of a top opening panel or menu, leaving significant controls at the bottom. I was one of the many who told you that wasn’t good enough. If I wanted split controls with a top address bar and bottom-opening panel I'd use Edge. Finally you restored a top opening menu and I came back to Firefox.

But now here we are again and you've screwed the pooch again. FFS.

Most of the apps I had that jumped on the bottom control bandwagon have actually reverted since, but here you go again. Look: for me this isn't just aesthetics, it is actual PAIN. I'm disabled. Large screen phone. Never use it one-handed - hold in left hand, operate controls with right hand. If I have to switch between top and bottom controls, that means using my arm to move my hand, which HURTS. I need Firefox to have either a top opening menu, as it had, or a top opening panel like the Android Quick Settings panel, and absolutely NOT a bottom opening panel.

Even Google, who started the whole bottom controls fad, have dropped it and Google Chrome, I see, is back to top address bar and top opening menu because there were good reason why that's the standard - reasons which still apply.

I will sadly now stop using Firefox Android until/unless you at least give the option for a top opening menu or panel. If that doesn't happen I'll shortly give up using desktop Firefox too. Way to go, guys. Can you really afford to drive users away?

Yours in mingled annoyance and sorrow.
