I have been using Firefox for years, and it’s a great browser (except for a few irritating bugs in TOOLKIT/PASSWORD MANAGER/COMPATIBILITY – but that’s for another post…).
I am embarrassed to say, I have only just discovered Firefox Backup. This looks to be a very useful tool for populating a new profile (if creating new one for testing, in case of a corrupted default one).
I only discovered it by reading BUG https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2029240
That fixed some subtle failure issues with it, so it should be working well for everyone now.
SUGGESTION: can this very useful feature be made more prominent in a blog or other useful vehicle in the MOZILLA community? Is this the correct forum for this? Please advise if not.
As mentioned below, it’s also very handy for setting up a new PC when you add Firefox, in case your SYNC functions have an issue. Plus, it’s handy to cover any data loss, or a buggy update that might lose your accumulated tabs when starting up where you left off.
Firefox backup is used to safeguard personal browsing data—including bookmarks, passwords, history, settings, and extensions—allowing users to restore information after a system crash, browser error, or move it to a new device. It serves as a local alternative to Firefox Sync, protecting against data loss. [1, 2, 3]

I'm glad you found the feature useful! We are definitely working on additional messaging for the feature, and our backlog has a bunch of improvements which I'd love to work on in the future to increase the use cases.
One thing you might find interesting already is the "copy profile" feature. You'll find it in the profiles menu, and it does exactly what you mentioned "populating a new profile for testing". It leverages Firefox Backup code to do it.
Thanks,
-David

FYI: In the latest Firefox 150.03 release, they have made the Backup Profiles component more secure, by fixing up CVE-2026-8401 Sandbox Escape.
