Inbox suddenly emptied!

Yesterday my inbox suddenly went totally empty. I was struck. Cannot find all the many emails anywhere, neither in Drafts, Archive, Wastebasket or anywhere. Can anyone explain to me what has happened? And, most important: how do I get all my emails back?
