Global media player controls in GNOME do not open tab playing media

On my system, which is running a GNOME Wayland session on NixOS, the media controls interface (shown in figure 1), which shows media playing in Firefox, when clicked, brings Firefox into focus, but does not adequately go to the media playing tab.

Specifically, clicking it brings Firefox into focus, and if no Firefox window exists on the current workspace, a workspace with Firefox open is switched to. But the focused window isnโ€™t necessarily the window with the media playing tab, and if that tab is not open, the window doesnโ€™t switch to it.

I wanted to ask if this is behaviour that Firefox can change, or if this is a limitation of GNOME, MPRIS or Wayland.
