get email problem

On latest version when I click on GET MESSAGES nothing seems to happen for several minutes than after repeated clicks on same suddenly line at bottom shows downloading some number of messages. Is this something I am doing to slow what used to be very speedy process to download messages from Comcast server to my PC?
