When I close all open Firefox browsers and then open a new browser, the number of bytes, X above, ranges from about 2kb to 4.0mkb. From the quote above I assumed that the default behavior was to delete all cached data. How can I ensure that this is done?

I have been having the same problem. I unset it and reset it and have the same problem. Sometimes after long sessions the cache has been as high as 42mb. If I forget and don't manually run an "empty" cache, my browser will slow to a crawl and if many tabs are open simultaneously the browser begins to freeze. A shut-down of my computer is often necessary and I loose all my on-going work and I have to start again from the beginning of my work and pray that I am able to finish. I am seriously looking for an alternative browser. Does anyone have an answer?
