Change how pdfs (and their text) are traced

Right now it is super slow and annoying to use firefox for PDFs, which is pretty sad. Even Microsoft Edge is able to handle my documents better than Firefox (and I know that it hasn't always been like this!).
So could you please change how PDFs are being processed and their text is being traced?

@dablue just to confirm, are you saying opening PDFs is slow? Are there specific PDFs where you see the slowness?
