I am a longtime Firefox user who has also experienced this too many times over the past couple of months. All of a sudden Firefox functionality is impaired and a message comes up saying I must close Firefox to keep using. The message also says that all tabs will be restored except private ones. But one of the main reasons I use Firefox is to preserve privacy. So this means I need to permanently close between 2 - 10 tabs that I have open where I am currently doing work. This makes Firefox a significantly less attractive option for me.

No matter which browser you might use -- Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Vivaldi -- they all need a full close-down sometimes to install an update to keep you secure.
Obviously Private tabs cannot be restored between sessions as that would defeat the point if they could be brought-back easily.
You can reduce updates via Menu -> Settings -> About Firefox and then change from "Automatically install updates" to "Check for updates, but choose when to install". But remember delaying updates for ages is also not good, especially if you often visit unfamiliar or uncommon websites.

Assuming you're using something like Microsoft Office Online or Google Docs, not sure why an update of Firefox is causing you to lose work, as those online office apps usually AutoSave by-default. When you go back to the site, a draft of what you were working on should come back.
If it's causing that much of an issue, go to Menu -> Settings -> About Firefox and then change from
"Automatically install updates" to "Check for updates, but choose when to install".

Mon navigateur est géré par mon organisation.
I use, DisableAppUpdate (e.g.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIwTxJjiPkI
At one point in the video, a black screen appears, and that's normal, that's my strategy, the time it takes to answer Yes in the "User Account Control" (UAC) dialog box.
For information. If you want to try Enterprise Policy Generator.
