Usability problems with Firefox Android's new 3 dots menu

The new 3 dots menu for Firefox Android is a significant UX regression:

  • The order of button rows is backward:
    • Most frequently used buttons like refresh, forward, share are the furthest way from the 3-dots button. I have smaller hand and can't even reach the refresh button without shifting the phone.
    • Rarely used button like Settings or Sync is nearest
  • As a consequent, double tapping the 3-dots button no longer refresh the page. I used this very frequently.
  • I used the Open in app button a lot. It let me avoid tracking from various platforms, by viewing without login in the browser, only opening the apps when needed. With the new menu, I have to go to a sub-menu to access this button.
  • Click to open sub-menu is a worst UX than just scrolling up. It requires more precision, shift buttons around, giving user less control.

Here are things I enjoy from the updated menu:

  • Horizontal button group for history, bookmark,... make better use of screen estate.
  • Swiping down to close the menu is a better UX than reaching all the way to the other side of the screen.
  • Managing extensions is a bit better.

It's horrific.

I totally agree with you about the location of the most used button like back/forward/refresh and above all "share" buttons , completely out of reach from thumbs in bottom-bar mode. They are now stuck on the upper quarter of my screen (redmi note 10 pro)

And I'm not ranting at frost usage, I've been using it for weeks in the nightlies....

I cannot agree more.  I NEVER comment about app changes, but this one has been incredibly frustrating in such a small amount of time.  I'm going to have to find another browser that has the forward and back buttons closer to my right thumb.

At least let us customize the three dot menu.  This wasn't very well implemented or thought out.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments about this. OP has it exactly right. I guess all four of us are the only Firefox users left to complain about things... Make it three now...

Do the devs actually read any of this?  It feels like screaming into the void.

The new menu design makes using extensions like noscript extremely klunky.

Quit breaking stuff that's already good!

Most of the time it do feels like screaming into the void. But this time they actually partially fixed it!
The refresh bar is now on the bottom. However, the button hitbox and animation make it so double tapping to refresh still doesn't work.
Other common actions like Find in page or Open in app is still hard to access, while rarely used actions like Manage backup and sync and Settings is still the closest.
Hopefully this can be further improved.

I recently bought a new phone which resulted in Firefox having a new 3 button menu (phone still has the old menu). Searching around led me to this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1mhzip9/comment/n702o8k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x...

Which allowed me to revert the original 3 button menu on my new phone. The problem with the new menu for me as for many others, is that the frequently used buttons are harder to reach: back, share, and reload.

The rest doesn't really bother me as much probably because those 3 buttons are the main reason I open this menu.
