Total number of messages only visible after having opened a folder - bug or feature?

Hi,

the total number of message is only visible after you have opened a folder, otherwise no message is visible.

Is this a bug or feature?

I would prefer if there was a parameter to control the visibility of these messages, always or only after having opened a folder.
