Testing the adblock-rust Engine in Firefox

Making moves

A few days ago I came across this exciting development: Firefox is incorporating a built-in ad-blocking system. It is not enabled by default, as it is still under development and being integrated into the browser. After researching how to set it up, I tested it on two Windows machines, and although it requires several steps to activate, it has performed well overall — though not quite as well as one might hope.

For example, on YouTube it blocks ads on the main page, but still displays them during videos. On other sites such as news outlets, gaming pages, and speed test tools, it performs very well. In terms of resource consumption, it still uses considerably more than extensions like uBlock Origin, which handles system resources much more efficiently.

That said, this is still a work in progress, and further improvements are expected. Even so, it represents a significant step forward in making Firefox a more secure and privacy-respecting browser.
