Task bar icon new message indicator doesn't clear when messages are read

Thunderbird 115.1.0,  Win10 latest

Task bar icon new message indicator doesn't clear when messages are read.  Selecting a different folder then reselecting the Inbox folder clears the indicator.  Shouldn't this happen automatically?
