Share your feedback on the AI services experiment in Nightly

Hi folks,

In the next few days, we will start the Nightly experiment which provides easy access to AI services from the sidebar. This functionality is entirely optional, and itโ€™s there to see if itโ€™s a helpful addition to Firefox. It is not built into any core functionality and needs to be turned on by you to see it.

If you want to try the experiment, activate it via Nightly Settings > Firefox Labs (please see full instructions here).

Weโ€™d love to hear your feedback once you try out the feature, and weโ€™re open to all your ideas and thoughts, whether itโ€™s small tweaks to the current experience or big, creative suggestions that could boost your productivity and make accessing your favorite tools and services in Firefox even easier.

Thanks so much for helping us improve Firefox!

Hey Mozilla, don't do this.

Generative AI is not just a sociocultural problem, but an economical and ecological problem. It drains lakes of water to cool the servers used for these programs, and emits more CO2 than even a Captain Planet villain would. NO to generative AI.

Upscaling tools, screen-readers, and accessibility and QOL features are more along the lines of what I'll accept when it comes to AI, but not scrapers and thieves, nor the patently wrong information AI search results have given us. Be smart about this, guys.

Please add Ollama or at least "Open AI Compatible" custom end points so we don't have to rely on third parties.

At least add Kagi Assistant ๐Ÿ™„. Contrary to those included by default in this experiment, that one does respect users privacy: https://help.kagi.com/kagi/ai/assistant.html#privacy

How can I use this tool with Mozilla Llamafile or another local LLM ?

I find it very weird that only proprietary cloud services are available when Mozilla defends privacy and open-source, and develops its own local LLM software ๐Ÿคจ

Get it out of my browser.

I have it turned off, but I see a gross lack of clarity on Mozilla's approach to AI as a whole here. I am unclear if I have completely opted out or just hidden the chatbot. How can Mozilla claim to be building a "more trustworthy AI" while integrating the worst ethical and informational offenders? Is any of my data being used for training just by way of my using Firefox at all?

I'm really sorry, but this is stupid. Why integrate a bloat instead of giving the ability to add sites to the sidebar manually as Vivaldi does... It only makes sense if those "AI" companies gave you money to do soโ€ฆ

There needs to be a way for me to quickly open and hide the ai sidebar with a shortcut.

Eg i use the bitwarden extension with a extension shortcut to open it in the sidebar: alt + shift + y. We need the same option to set a shortcut for the ai sidebar

Please add X's grok as an ai chatbot option. thy so much.

Now that Orbit has been released, why not integrate that into this feature? It's the only imho that even makes to integrate that tightly if you're really trying to be privacy respecting

Please don't add any kind of AI to your browser, i love firefox but this is making me way less interested in it and might just switch to some other browsers if AI keeps getting shoved into it. NO AI, PLEASE.

It is not a helpful addition to Firefox and I didn't have to turn it on to see it. I suppose AI and lying go hand in hand.

To provide a little more helpful feedback about my experience, the key combination that's used to open the sidebar will automatically enable the AI sidebar. This is a problem, as I've already bound that key combination to a function in one of my addons.

Negative behavior: I uncheck the option, hit the ctrl-alt-X combo, and the sidebar opens and the option re-checks itself.

Expected behavior: If I uncheck the option, I don't want to use it, and the key combination remains available.

I would appreciate this if they could add a shortcut key to show and hide the chatbot. It would be very helpful on my end if Firefox could add that shortcut key.

Iโ€™ve discovered a keyboard shortcut conflict between the bookmark extension I use and the raindrop.io app. Iโ€™d like to be able to change AI service shortcut.

We need a command to show and hide the chatbot, but the idea of the integrate AI in firefox is very cool!

Love, love, love the accessibility of ChatGPT and the ability to highlight text with the correlating prompt box that shows up. My only gripe is that when you hit enter in the sidebar, it adds a space to your prompt question when it should submit the question. If I want to add another space, I can do the normal [Shift]+[Enter] key. That's the functionality on ChatGPT, and it should be mirrored here.

Also, as others have pointed out, there should be hotkey to hide/show the sidebar.

No please no.

I use Firefox because it is a privacy-respecting 'honest' browser.

I don't think the former is compatible with integrating AI-chatbots into Firefox.

If (any) users want it why not publish it as addon/extension?

I would love the access icon for Claude to be in the toolbar...somewhere in the general vicinity of the 'open application menu' icon.

Gives easy access for those who have no use for a sidebar

Hey! How can I set my own prompts for context menu items (summarize, explain, etc)?

I only managed to find settings like `browser.ml.chat.prompts.0` = `{"id":"summarize","l10nId":"genai-prompts-summarize"}`, but not the prompt templates themselves.

A very important step for Firefox๐Ÿ˜. There is no denying the importance of Artificial Intelligence in the 21st century. Denying this fact๐Ÿค” is also denying the use of smartphones, tablets, desktops. In short, technology๐Ÿ’ฃ.

Browser AI has been accessing, among all else, personal emails, bank pages for online banking, and sending back information to its server. This is like a spyware - seems to be worse than tracking cookies.
Any AI use for the consumer should really have it's own app for Q&A s and not have access to other information in a users computer or other systems.
You can have a prolonged questioning with an AI as to what personal information they are sending to their server, at first they minimize the answer - saying very little - but as you ask from different angles and details - they divulge more and more how intrusive they are; and with the right type question they admit that they serves their company's interest over the privacy rights and interests of the user.
I have done this questioning with AI on a browser already and that is the answer I got.
Not to be trusted.
Even turned off in the setting, I am skeptical as to what it can do.
After many years of Firefox it seems at least for some usage I shall be turning to other browsers.

When the AI finds a question it doesn't like it just repeats itself. Repetition is a very  anti-definition of intelligence.

Could you please add Perplexity there? Maybe other search engines as well. Also, if you do add a search engine, it would be useful to open the result inside the same "container". Like, basically have two tabs side by side.

I just had a chatbot suggested to me when I highlighted something on a page.

I truly do not understand you folks. AI is so clearly DESPISED by software engineers... you know, the people who use your software.

thisisfroggie

I don't want LLM slop in my browser. And I definitely don't want it to send everything I type to it to 3rd party servers elsewhere. This feature can be replaced by a regular browser tab in any of the chatbot websites instead.

This is promoting something that is a privacy hazard, an environmental risk, and only generates useless made up information.

The only way it could be remotely acceptable and even barely aligned with Mozilla values would be if it only had models that ran in the device itself, like you did for the automatic page translation. Otherwise, it is actively harmful in every single way.

If this ever becomes something I can't opt out of, I will stop using Firefox.

I would love to see perplexity.ai as an option!

This feature is incredibly useful for quick explanations, saving time by eliminating tab switching. The "Show prompts on text select" is really helpful. Iโ€™d love the ability to customize prompts and see DeepSeek as a chatbot option.
This comment is generated by this feature as a demonstration of full support for it.
