Share your feedback on the AI services experiment in Nightly

Hi folks,

In the next few days, we will start the Nightly experiment which provides easy access to AI services from the sidebar. This functionality is entirely optional, and it’s there to see if it’s a helpful addition to Firefox. It is not built into any core functionality and needs to be turned on by you to see it.

If you want to try the experiment, activate it via Nightly Settings > Firefox Labs (please see full instructions here).

We’d love to hear your feedback once you try out the feature, and we’re open to all your ideas and thoughts, whether it’s small tweaks to the current experience or big, creative suggestions that could boost your productivity and make accessing your favorite tools and services in Firefox even easier.

Thanks so much for helping us improve Firefox!

I started using Firefox as an alternative to Google Chrome about a year ago. It was smooth at first, but something changed.

My first real issue, STOP with the constant updates! (Yes, I disable automatic updates because I read them first). If you have security updates, don't package them behind experimental (dumb) add-ons.

LLM development inside Firefox, over just an extension looks bad in my eyes. Why? because it seems like you just want to collect people's data so you can yourself become another one of those types of companies (Google, Facebook).

On this same topic, I continuously see warnings and/ or highly negative comments based around implementing LLMs, but Firefox ignores those comments, Why?

Why give users votes, if you're not going to use them? This isn't a video game forum where you can easily blind people with gimmicks. People will see the bull s h i t.

I call on Firefox to not automatically contain large language models, unless the individual downloads it directly as a feature. It shouldn't automatically be contained in the Firefox browser by default, but as a separate download.

I came here to get away from all the fake labeling of artificial intelligence, because it's not actually intelligent.

Mozilla is playing a very dangerous game here with LLMs. If someone leaves Google for Firefox, they would happily leave Firefox for less.

Use a very obscure keyboard shortcut to pull up the window. It currently uses Ctrl+Shift+L which is one I use all the time and now I need to adjust my muscle memory for a feature that re-enables itself every time I press the keyboard shortcut.

I use Taskade which integrates ChatGPT and think that could be a very interesting partnership.

More junk and bloatware I don't need.

For those who want AI go off to a seach engine or website and play but don't embed more junk in the browser. Totoaslly unnecessary, apart from the fact that AI is far from 'Intelligent' and is barely pre -Alpha market hyped machine learning crud.

I'd rather you spent some figuring out the H265 scenario so we can play videos again than on this meaningless nonsense, and keep up to date with config settings so we can disable them easily across our network widewith policies instead of introducing features with no EASY way to to disable them as is current policy.

I can see it being useful for School but please add a shortcut to toggle it, otherwise it is mostly in the way. If you add support for local LLMs like llama 3 I might actually consider using it, since I don't want to use any of the built in alternatives.

1) An option to separate its cookies so that it can be kept separate from our account or even run it like incognito. For example I already have my account logged in to ChatGPT and HuggingChat, and they are the only ones that allow chatting without creating an account. So any page translation/summary I do using them creates a new chat in my account, which creates a LOT of chats and becomes a struggle to manage.

2) An option to create a custom shortcut to open/close the Chatbot sidebar (or just provide us with a shortcut).

My Firefox version: 132.0 (64-bit)

This is a horrible feature that no one needs directly in-browser. Add it as an official extension if you must, but GenAI's ethical, environmental and privacy issues place it directly opposite the Mozilla manifesto. Remove this feature. You'll lose a lot of users if you do this.

I hope that the window for interacting with the AI service to be free. Voilà AI extansion is a great example of this for more smoother experience.

Add the ability to use a local LLM on capable hardware (such as Llama), or allow adding custom URL schemas

I do like the feature, but I have a few questions: First I wanna have a Shortcut to the Bot so that I can press ctrl+alt+K for example and it would pop up. This would be phenomenal.

ctrl + shift + L as a shortcut interferes with one used by Bitwarden.

I am a firm proponent of Mozilla generally and Firefox in particular. I am also a data scientist, and as such have been handling machine learning for several years now. It can be very useful when applied well. An introduction of “AI” into Firefox would mean I will stop using it entirely because it is categorically not a good application of machine learning.

I would be extremely sorry to see this happen, I hate to see so many companies fall into what can only be described as peer pressure to do “AI” like all the cool kids are doing.

Get this slop out of my browser. Why in heavens name a privacy focused browser would be making this an available option is beyond me. Firefox has utterly lost the plot.

I'm glad they're not deeply integrated into Firefox. This means it would be nice if the dropdown allowed for a custom URL or even local mode perhaps running through openwebui.com.

This code should not be in Firefox core at all, enabled or otherwise. No problem with it as an add-on for those who want/need it but it is not required for a browser to function so let's not go there. I'm reminded of Netscape who effectively destroyed themselves by bloating the core product and finally killed it off after pushing Communicator onto users who just wanted a browser. Please don't do this. Reading this thread a lot of us feel the same way and I am one of those who will stop using Firefox if this continues.

Even if it’s optional, it still isn’t going to be helpful to anyone I believe. Don’t do it!

Absolutely no thank you! I don't want to add a sidebar that lazily summarizes something I'd rather read myself. I thought Mozilla had enough respect for their consumers to simply not add in a feature that coddles the exponentially decreasing attention span of the masses, but here we are. Generative AI is not the future.

Bloat. Anyone and everyone who is cheering Mozilla for adding "AI" into the browser are google employees and their paid shills.

NOBODY who loves Firefox and wish it well will ever agree to degrade Firefox like this. Whoever came up with adding these kind of junk to the browser should be fired ASAP.

Stop it already with the AI grift. No one wants this, no one will use this, no one will befenit from this. It is a waste of both your development resources and the world's natural resources. It is a privacy nightmare. It is a flagrant violation of copyright for private interest. It is diminishing people's ability to think critically, to understand information and news, to imagine, to be creative and to solve problems.

You are on the wrong side of history.

Can we have a setting to auto-open the sidebar when the browser starts? The current setup makes the functionality no quicker than clicking on the shortcuts on the open page.

Please allow the users to disable it on certain websites... and add it to the standard menu (it should be the same menu that you find when you right click)

Please, allow the sidebar to be made smaller.  May it be an option as a developer tool to be enabled.  This function will bring utility in use cases.

There should be a way to access the chatbot without double clicking. Maybe a shortcut or a button. There's screen real estate beside the refresh button.

I liked the feature. please also add meta ai in the list. I previously seen this in brave browser. But there i dont need any login type **bleep**. so i recommend acessing ai without login will be good. And also need to open the sidebar from the top right corner is also good

Hi, I love the new feature and firefox as well ofc. I was wanting a simple feature like "mark text"->"ask questions / summarize it" for a couple of weeks now. Looking forward to have this feature integrated in the reader view as well.

I'm missing an extra toolbar button to quickly switch between my TreeStyleTab sidebar view and the chat. plz.

Hey, personally, I like the new feature, but I would like it even more if there were more AI options and the navigation menu at the top was removed. In the future, it might be great to add social interfaces to the sidebar 😁.

I think it's really cool that AI is being integrated into browsers! I understand that some people might be a bit wary, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to. I don't get all the negative feedback.

Personally, I use it a lot, especially for translating. It's definitely more convenient than DeepL or Google Translate.

Of course, the integration isn't perfect. I added the shortcut "Show side panels" to my favorites bar, but it takes me straight to my bookmarks.

It would be awesome to be able to use language models (LLMs) directly on your computer, especially since there are so many free ones available. It would allow for even more customization.
