Share your feedback on the AI services experiment in Nightly

Hi folks,

In the next few days, we will start the Nightly experiment which provides easy access to AI services from the sidebar. This functionality is entirely optional, and itโ€™s there to see if itโ€™s a helpful addition to Firefox. It is not built into any core functionality and needs to be turned on by you to see it.

If you want to try the experiment, activate it via Nightly Settings > Firefox Labs (please see full instructions here).

Weโ€™d love to hear your feedback once you try out the feature, and weโ€™re open to all your ideas and thoughts, whether itโ€™s small tweaks to the current experience or big, creative suggestions that could boost your productivity and make accessing your favorite tools and services in Firefox even easier.

Thanks so much for helping us improve Firefox!

My UNIX team will always Veto Artificial_Intelligence (AI) and its Zero Intelligence Quantity (0 IQ). For instance, the entire Internet, Oracle Java6<, MS .Net3<, Python3<, and Apple Swift3< are the worst programming ever made! It is why we love servers younger than 2007, just as BlackBerry-OS2, WinXP3, DOS3.1, MacOS9, OSX.4, and Nintendo64. Right, AMD? Graham Bell? Asus? HP? LinkSys? IBM?  Realtek? INTRAnet?

Please do not put AI into Firefox. I came to Firefox to escape all the AI, not run right back into it. If you implement this I may just stop using your services altogether.

I backgraded to an older version of firefox to remove this crap from my computer. Unfortunately, I value my security marginally more than I despise AI, so now this bull**bleep** is back on my computer wit 131.0.2 cause I ain't wanna deal with zero-day vulnerabilities. Thanks, I **bleep**ing hate it.

Please add the ability to add options to the Right Click context menu -> Ask GPT -> [options]

I would like to be able to add custom options with custom prompts.

Unfortunately, the AI โ€‹โ€‹chatbot in the sidebar is not compatible with GPT4all's Local API Server.

Absolutely the f*ck NOT.  I will switch to a different browser if you try this sh*t.

This is an incredibly stupid move. Firefox's number one appeal is privacy and reliability and you're implementing bells and whistles that nobody likes or wants. AI is just the shiniest new tech bubble doing irreparable damage to the digital landscape until it bursts. Waste of time, money, and resources on part of the company. And clearly, not a popular one reading the other replies. Firefox doesn't need to keep up with AI but remain a browser that stands AWAY from that bull**bleep** poisoning our information wells. Frankly, given your primary consumer base of people who DON'T like being tracked and stolen from and advertised to- people who take the time from their day to use nonstandard browsers and search engines- I cannot IMAGINE what could've prompted this decision aside from an incredible and alarming naivety from the company tech departments or meddling from distant corporate directors with no real idea of what they're actually doing beyond hopping the bandwagon set to plummet off a cliff.

I like this idea, maybe integrate it well with multi-account containers.

Also, I know some users don't like this feature. Maybe make an extension out of it!

Please provide a keyboard shortcut for accessing the side bar so that accessing the AI chatbot is easier

Throwing ethics regarding specific AI services, this is a very useful feature and one that I often use in Edge all the time. Thanks for adding it! I'm sure I'm not the only one who refers to AI services at random times to ask random questions.

I don't know if this will seen, but I'd like it if you could make the textbox enter-to-send instead of having it start a new line. I think this is how most chatbots work.

Gen AI and Advertising is the wrong path for you, almost no one in your user base wants this, you will loose all trust you worked so hard to build, don't listen to what Business consulting firms tell you

A key benifit of this for me is
> Nightly can be configured by advanced testers to use custom prompts and any compatible chatbot, such as llamafile

How do we actually configure this to use a local LLM?
The detailed instructions say it can be done, but not how to do it. I did get nightly installed but the settings look the same.

Very good, but I missed having a keyboard shortcut to trigger the panel.

Hi, great feature, thanks! One question: Can you allow the user to create his own "easy access" phrases, backed by a prompt the user can write? For example, currently there is "Summarize", "simplify" and "quiz me" (my german translations). How about users can enter a brief title for a task and back it by a prompt which they write in a text-field in Firefox.

Funny, every comment supporting this crap sound like easily manipulated people, bots or people who work at NVIDIA.

One thing - will the sidebar integration be customizable? I like a clean interface.

Hi, how do we connect Oobabooga to this feature? I think it's great because I don't have to switch tabs.

I have both ethical and environmental objections to AI. I will not be using any features you produce using it, so please save your time and money for something worthwhile.

My organization recommends being careful with information typed online, whether in search engines or LLMs. Because I'm a geek, I mostly use local, pretrained models with Ollama. I understand it's a lab option, but only ethical, open and privacy-friendly bots (like some provided in Ollama and Llamafile), identified after careful examination by your AI team, should be offered in Firefox - and why not providing them in a friendly AI-model store!

Hey! Is there a way to open the chatbot sidebar with a keyboard shortcut?

And of course, a keyboard shortcut will massively improve the experience!

FogCM

I only want it as an extension, not built-in.

Some issues:

- this forum is horrible for getting ideas across. (Old) Reddit's style is so much easier.

- add option to use a popup/overlay instead of taking over the entire sidebar. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to pick the most annoying option. Look at how an extension like Tab Stash does it; it can show information in several different ways. The attachment shows at least three with the top-right pop-up the thing I was referring to.

- hardcoded prompts, even for an experiment, is inexcusable. You can't even set them in about:config.

I like the AI sidebar option (opt in and no one gets hurt).

But I'm missing a setting to change it to a custom URL. E.g. in our company we have an explicit ChatGPT instance, and self hosted Meta-Llama. We are only allowed to use those for work.

Please don't do this, you would be contributing to the already vast amount of ai services other browsers provide that a majority of people equally don't want or like.

I'm using this feature 10-20 times a day and there is a serious problem, when I'm starting dialogue with chatgpt it does not reopens after sidepanel was closed by me or hidden by pressing "show sidepanel" button (it opens from start always, no matter of time), please fix this

Could DuckDuckGo AI Chat be added? Or add a way to specify a custom AI Chat Bot.

The 'Prompt on text select' is too easy to misclick. It's also visually jarring to see the icon pop up whenever I select text. I prefer accessing those options through the context menu (the menu opened with a right click).

New shortcut for the chatbot is causing issues with my password manager. Tried disabling the sidebar in the settings but it keeps popping up when pressing CTRL+SHIFT+L.

I think it's a pretty bad shortcut because a lot of password managers use it for autofill.

Opened a report on Bugzilla #1927324 - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1927324

This needs to be fully disable-able.

At the moment, I turn it off in settings, try to get Bitwarden to work, but you've hijacked the keyboard combo and instead automatically re-enable this AI thing and then pop it up.

Either allow the keyboard shortcut to be disabled, or this entire feature to be disabled.  At the moment, you've blocked that - as you allow a keyboard shortcut to enable it and immediately run it, even if turned off in settings.  (With no hint of shortcut keys.)

I didn't care about this feature until you took the Ctrl+Shift+L I always use on my password manager for this feature. But it is a HARD NO for me!

This has been mapped to an annoying shortcut and activates on its own, even if I uncheck the box. Please fix this.
