Search overrides current open window, VERY annoying

You are working in open active window tab, need to search which then deletes that window that you had open.

Have I missed a way to disable this? Search should just auto open a new tab window. So to rectify, you must GO BACK ONE PAGE and  you lose the search results. Such a waste of electrons.

Hi, what method are you using to search? There are settings for the main address bar and for the optional search bar to open whatever you submit there in a new tab. Would that be worth a try? Here's how:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. Please keep in mind that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(B) In the search box in the page, type or paste intab and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should list several preferences. Double-click to switch between false and true as desired:
