In previous versions, the behavior of searching in the address bar with another search engine was the same as using default search. Which would replace the current page. Now, it is the same using the default search , but using another engine changes it, which becomes the same as opening new tab. This feels like a misdesign? Is there any way to change that behavior?

To change this, type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click "Accept the Risk and Continue."
Next, search for browser.search.openintab and set it to false by double-clicking it.
Now, all searches will stay in the same tab instead of opening a new one. Be careful with advanced settings, as they can affect how Firefox works.
