Firefox 159.0 on Android Repeatedly Crashing with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

FieldDay1
Making moves
I am experiencing repeated crashes with Firefox 159.0 for Android on a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Firefox has crashed multiple times today, repeatedly triggering Android's “Firefox keeps stopping” message. Samsung Device Care has now independently flagged Firefox as “crashing frequently.”

I checked Firefox's own Crash Reports page and found multiple crashes recorded today. They consistently show java.lang.OutOfMemoryError errors.

Examples include:

• 5:40 PM:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Failed to allocate a 104 byte allocation with 2209536 free bytes and 2157KB until OOM, target footprint 268435456, growth limit 268435456; giving up on allocation because <1% of heap free after GC.

• 2:19 PM:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Failed to allocate a 104 byte allocation with 1120400 free bytes and 1094KB until OOM, target footprint 268435456, growth limit 268435456; giving up on allocation because <1% of heap free after GC.

• 2:18 PM:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Failed to allocate a 40 byte allocation with 243664 free bytes and 237KB until OOM, target footprint 268435456, growth limit 268435456; giving up on allocation because <1% of heap free after GC.

• 1:11 PM:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: OutOfMemoryError thrown while trying to throw an exception; no stack trace available.

• 1:10 PM:
Another java.lang.OutOfMemoryError occurred while attempting a 104-byte allocation, again reporting <1% of heap free after GC.

There are additional crash reports beyond these.

Firefox's Crash Reports setting is already set to “Send automatically.”

As a troubleshooting step, I checked Android's Firefox storage usage:

App: 293 MB
Data: 719 MB
Cache: 618 MB
Total: 1.63 GB

I cleared ONLY the cache. It successfully dropped from 618 MB to 0 B while leaving the 719 MB of application data untouched. I have not cleared Firefox's data or uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox because I do not want to unnecessarily erase local browser data while this problem is being investigated.

Samsung Device Care subsequently displayed this warning:

“Firefox is crashing frequently. Put it in deep sleep to keep your phone running smoothly.”

Putting my web browser into deep sleep is obviously not a solution to repeated OutOfMemoryError crashes.

Device: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
Firefox: 159.0
Installation source: Google Play Store

I am posting this so Mozilla and other Firefox Android users are aware of the problem and to find out whether anyone else is experiencing repeated OutOfMemoryError crashes with Firefox 159.0.

I have screenshots of Firefox's Crash Reports page, the Android crash warning, Samsung Device Care's frequent-crashing warning, Firefox version information, and the storage/cache information. Unfortunately the error appears on this forum: The file type (.jpeg) is not supported.

I would appreciate Mozilla investigating whether Firefox 159.0 has introduced or exposed a memory-management problem on Android.
