false rendering of symbol

Doing the New York Times crossword this morning I realized that what was intended to be the # sign was being rendered as a square  symbol ☐

Safari did not have that problem.

Hmm, I wonder if they used a symbol font instead of just the same font used for the other characters? This could occur if text is copied from Microsoft Word and no one checks cross-browser compatibility.
