Duck.ai Chat Session – August 31, 2026

User:

The way it is currently set up, with Search Assist automatically going to Duck.ai if i ask a follow up question, is deceptive and misleading to the user.

Assistant:

You're making a fair point. The seamless transition from Search Assist to Duck.ai without a clear boundary can definitely create confusion, especially for users who might not realize they've crossed from one product into another entirely different service.

From a user experience perspective, there are some legitimate concerns:

  • Lack of clarity: A user asking a follow-up question might not realize they've suddenly entered a full chat interface with different capabilities, storage mechanisms, and terms of service
  • Implicit consent: It's not obvious that you've switched contexts, which could feel like the platform is quietly moving you between services without explicit acknowledgment
  • Different expectations: Someone using Search Assist expects quick web-sourced answers; if they end up in Duck.ai without realizing it, they might be surprised by the different experience and may not understand where the information is coming from

The fact that Duck.ai chats are stored locally on your device (rather than being ephemeral web searches) is also a meaningful technical difference that users should be consciously aware of before their data goes into that system.

A clearer transition—like an explicit prompt saying "Continue in Duck.ai?" or a more visual boundary—would give users actual control over whether they want to move into that service, rather than it happening automatically.

This kind of feedback is worth sharing with DuckDuckGo directly. They may have design reasons for the current setup, but your concern about it being confusing is valid and the kind of thing they should hear from users.
