Auto updating doesn't work on MacOS when not using Applications folder or admin user

For security reasons, I cannot use the admin user to install the Firefox background updater service.
Also, the application is installed by the user, in their own custom directory, not the global Applications folder.
This breaks auto updating.
Is there a way to make auto updating work in this case?
