Advanced Privacy & Security Enhancements for Firefox (2026–2027)

This proposal introduces a set of advanced privacy and security features designed to strengthen Firefox against modern tracking, fingerprinting, and network‑based attacks. As the web becomes increasingly hostile, users who rely on Firefox for privacy need stronger, more flexible protection layers. The goal of this proposal is to expand Firefox’s existing privacy architecture with next‑generation tools that address current and emerging threats.

Several of these proposed privacy and security enhancements can also be applied to Firefox for Android, especially RFP++, Cold Mode, Script Isolation, Local Network Shield, and on‑device phishing detection. While the desktop version offers deeper architectural flexibility, many of the protections described here would significantly benefit mobile users as well.

The idea includes an extended anti‑fingerprinting mode (RFP++), offering deeper randomization of fingerprint‑relevant data such as Canvas/WebGL output, font lists, hardware concurrency, timers, and cache behavior. In addition, new Privacy Profiles (Hard Privacy, Security Mode, Cold Mode) would allow users to select pre‑configured privacy levels depending on their needs — from everyday protection to Tor‑inspired isolation.

The proposal also outlines a Zero‑Trust model for extensions, introducing isolated filesystems, restricted network access, permission decay, and real‑time behavior analysis to reduce the risk of malicious add‑ons. A Local Network Shield is suggested to protect users on public Wi‑Fi by detecting ARP/DNS spoofing, MITM attacks, and unsafe network conditions.

Further enhancements include Script Isolation Mode to mitigate side‑channel attacks, a local (on‑device) AI‑based phishing detector that preserves user privacy, and a comprehensive Privacy Audit Panel that reveals trackers, fingerprinting attempts, WebRTC leaks, script activity, and network requests. Finally, a stronger Cold Mode is proposed — a fully isolated browsing session with no cache, cookies, extensions, or persistent fingerprint surface.

Together, these features aim to reinforce Firefox’s leadership in privacy, provide stronger anonymity options, and offer users modern defenses against increasingly sophisticated tracking and exploitation techniques.
