Upon receiving a new mail, Thunderbird notifies the user through a screen notification. The downside is, after the notification dissipates, there is no clue hinting a new mail is pending besides putting Thunderbird in front.

The idea here is to keep the user notified there is a new mail pending, by either:

  • Add a "New mail" icon in the tray
  • Add a "New mail count / hint" in the taskbar

I know there are external utilities such as Birdtray, but i find them unpractical due to required manual configuration of each inbox to monitor. Having the feature within Thunderbird should make it easier to manage.

Making moves

I posted this in another thread, but it seems not to have been saved and posted.  So I will post it here.  Thunderbird used to notify me of new mail via a pop-up window in the lower right corner of the screen.  I have TB check for mail every 10 minutes.  That pop-up window, which was visible for five seconds, told me the subject lines of the mail.  This was fine.  A few days ago I upgraded from 115.13.0 to 128.0.1esr, and now these notifications come via the Windows Notification feature.  The problem is that Windows saves only the last 20 notifications, so, when I get lots of mail when I am not at the computer, I get more than 20 notifications, and I can only see the last 20.  There could be notifications from other programs that are lost.  I had to go to Setting --> Notifications & Actions to disable notification from Thunderbird.  Now, when I am at the computer, I get no notifications, and I cannot see subject lines of new messages.
