I like the Firefox Translations add on, but it would be great if there was a webpage similar to Google or Bing translate, where we can simply input text that needs translating, and it would translate it.

Alternatively, the add on could be expanded, so that when you click the add on icon in the browser it loads up a text box that you could add text you want translated, and it would translate it.

Firefox translations (Mozilla firefox) - translate text segment

Could the "Firefox translation" addon to translate just a text segmente (phrase, word, ...)?

In general, I usually use tools like translate.yandex.com (or Google); sometimes search engines help me searching "word in spanish" where "word" is the target.

Thank you, in advance.

Hi @Jon

Thanks for the update. Great news. Just to confirm, which part of my idea is in development, or are both parts currently being developed?

Hey @ADGrimes

Thanks for following up. The second part is being developed. And you (and any others interested) can test is before release here: https://github.com/mozilla/firefox-translations/#testing

How can i report bugs for firefox text translation?

@Jeppie please use Bugzilla to report bugs - there should be a 'Translation' option in the Component field:

Translation: Standalone window for translating free text

How about a toolbar icon where a small HTML 5 page opens in which free text, e.g. German text, can be entered in a text box and then translated into language X, e.g. English.

Later perhaps with more features, something like Speech-2-Text support.
What do you think?

One question is this translation technology allowed to be used freely?
If so, then you could also provide an API for translating, a can but not a should or a must 😉

For now, you can use about:translations to input text that needs translating - though the team is looking to make it nicer and easier to discover.

@Joncan you give this idea to the team for mobile please. I think this the best option for mobile. Text translation button on homepage between firefox emblem and the private mode button. If you press on it will open a special page or a overflow page where you can use text translation.

Add back offline translations in the toolbar

Since the original Translations addon is deprecated and about:translations is provided as a feature primarily aimed at developers, I would like to request the Offline Translation UI to be brought back into a prominent place in the browser chrome (something like a toolbar button, just like for the addon). I have been using this feature daily and has contributed significantly to reducing my reliance on Google (and Google Translate, in this case).
