My knee-jerk reaction is the same - all the major OSes now include screenshot tools by default, and for more detailed/advanced requirements there are good 3rd party applications. It doesn't make sense for Firefox to try to compete with those. However...
What is the use-case? Is the screenshot image needed for some application that only accepts JPEG? Or is the page subject composed of photographic-style imagery better handled by JPEG?
Thanks, this is a timely suggestion as this is one of the aspects we are looking at with a rewrite of the Screenshot feature. The proposed implementation does indeed use an alert, but having a "don't notify again" option is something we'll consider.
