I think the ability to have groups be on the sidebar, but tabs on the topbar, would be a really good feature. I love groups, but I find myself often still just using multiple windows instead of the groups. When I learned about vertical tabs, my brain instantly went "that would be great for groups". I could fully hide them when I don't need them, and when I do, it'd be very quick to switch between them, and quite a bit less jarring than using separate windows. Plus, they'd be named, so no more alt-tabbing through a rotation of windows searching for one, and it'd make reorganising tabs easier. Honestly, even just allowing for both vertical and horizontal tabs at the same time would be nice.

Lets see ... a teeny tiny addon to add the sidebar addon controls (ok)

add one line of css to userChrome.css to hide the tabgroup-placeholders.

Et Voila !

That’s how Safari on macOS implements tab groups (vertical group name list, horizontal tabs) — see screenshot below. It is nice, and it is a gentle introduction to vertical groups / tabs for people who are used to horizontal tabs. Additionally, in the vertical list of group names, when you hover the cursor over the name of a group, an arrow appears that allows you to vertically expand the list of that group’s tabs, as if browsing the files in a folder, with an indented sublist (see screenshot). This is useful when the group has so many tabs that the horizontal tab view become unwieldy. You get the best of both worlds, vertical and horizontal.

At the top, where it says “Personal – 1 Tab”, it refers to this window’s ungrouped tabs.

Also, the vertical list of group names is available on all open windows of a given user profile, regardless of which window (if any) is currently displaying the tab group. This allows easily switching which window should display the group — just click on the group name in the vertical list, for the group to display in that window.

Safari’s tab group navigation is great, and it is the main reason why I’ve been using Safari for years, instead of anything else. In my new job though, I have to use a Windows laptop (no Safari there), so I switched to Firefox and came looking for this feature!
