Environment:

  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • Thunderbird 128.12.0esr

Yesterday (7/25/2025) there were no issues with tbird (ie, tbird barely registered any cpu utilization while idle).

Today (7/26/2025), upon starting tbird, it would go into a state of 100% cpu utilization (actually about 105% as shown in top), even while idle.  The UI was (obviously) sluggish and unresponsive.

One web search hit I came across recommended a) shutdown tbird, b) remove (or rename) global-messages-db.sqlite and c) (re)start tbird.

Problem resolved. tbird no longer running @ 100% cpu utilization while idle. [tbird automatically created a new global-messages-db.sqlite file]

Scrounging through the system I see an Ubuntu auto-update occurred yesterday that updated the tbird installation (/lib/thunderbird), including updates to the thunderbird binary and several libs.

For some reason the latest update appears to have introduced an incompatibility between tbird and global-messages-db.sqlite ... ?

Recommendation/Request:

  • specifically to this issue - remove (or reformat?) global-messages-db.sqlite prior to starting tbird (perhaps based on a query of the sqlite file format or version?)
  • generally speaking - remove (or reformat?) *.sqlite files where their version/format is incompatible with the current/latest tbird version
