Previously, it was possible to start typing a search engine's keyword into the URL bar, after which the search engine would appear in the suggestions below. You could select it by repeatedly pressing the down arrow key. The bar would then clear and you could start typing your search and press Enter to send it.

However, this is no longer possible since the introduction of the selector on the left-hand side of the bar. This basically requires the use of a mouse, which is inconvenient when typing. Technically, it can be selected using Shift+Tab, the down arrow and Enter, but there is no search that requires pressing the down arrow many times.

Making moves

On opera I use the letter e for ecosia, I honestly find the drop-down menu of firefox more convenient, it allows me to search for a sentence beginning with "and " without forcing the search engine and I find it easier to understand for the ordinary user. Sometimes on opera I forget to type the initial letter and then search with the default engine. On Android it is obviously much more convenient to have the scrolling menu. Obviously the ideal would be to have both modes on the desktop 😉
