I am writing to formally request the implementation or enhancement of Speech Recognition API support in Firefox for Android, particularly when browsing in desktop mode. In the current landscape where AI-driven tools like ChatGPT Voice Mode, Microsoft Copilot Voice, and Google Gemini are becoming essential for productivity and accessibility, it is disappointing to see Firefox falling behind due to the lack of proper support for speech input.
Currently, when attempting to use voice input on AI platforms in desktop mode, Firefox for Android throws errors such as "It's not you, it's me", which confirms that speech recognition and audio stream capture are either unsupported or blocked. This restricts users from taking full advantage of browser-based voice AIโan emerging standard in both accessibility and user interaction.
As a long-time advocate and user of open-source technology, I urge Mozilla to recognize that speech input and voice recognition are no longer optional featuresโthey are core to modern web interaction. Without this, Firefox risks irrelevance among users who are shifting to AI-first workflows.
Request Summary:
Support the SpeechRecognition and webkitSpeechRecognition APIs in desktop mode on Firefox for Android.
Ensure audio input permissions and media capture from the microphone are enabled and accessible by web apps in desktop view.
Prioritize compatibility with ChatGPT Voice Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and other leading voice-based web platforms.
Fix the errors occurring when users attempt to use voice features via the mobile browser in desktop mode.
Implementing this would bring Firefox back in step with the evolving expectations of users in the AI era and would reinforce Mozillaโs commitment to accessibility, innovation, and open web standards.
Thank you for your continued efforts.
Sincerely,
B R Shriradhakrishnasharnam
