Hello! I hope that you are doing well.
So, I recently switched back to firefox and wanted to use vertical tabs as I got used to it in the zen browser, and I wanted to support firefox as it's the only viable non-google browser in the market.
But then I found that you have to manually click in order to collapse the vertical tabs and vice versa. In the Zen browser, which is still in beta, has a feature in which you just right click on any whitespace on the vertical tabs and enable compact mode.
This adds a slide in and out functionality in which when you point your cursor near the left side or close to the vertical tabs, it automatically slides out and when I point the mouse away to the webpage it automatically collapses, thus providing more focus on the content and adding convenience rather than having to click on the collapse option in firefox.
Also I think this should be added natively in firefox and not via an extension for better integration.
