For example, I have too many recipe tabs open. Let me create a tab for recipes and put them all in there and let the main recipe tab function like a drop down menu. I realize this is very similar to bookmarks, but for me, things have a tendency to get put there for future reference and are often forgotten and lost there.  In order to access sites in bookmarks, I've got to go to bookmarks/manage bookmarks  and then I'm thrown into a separate window from the browser.

The vertical tabs could contain current ideas and be moved to the bookmarks later, after I've dealt with them.

@Cuz there's a similar idea here: Adopt automatic tree structure for vertical tabs 

Also, the upcoming release of tab groups with vertical tabs could address this issue.

There are Tree Style tab extension that does grouping and you can put it on the side. Used it for several years and love it.
And if you need to keep pages open just for a reference, it may be a better idea to use specialized knowledge keeping software like obsidian for cards or various mindmaps for explicitly visual connections
