Status: New idea

I'd love to see bookmarks remembering the last tab group they were in. On opening them again, they should restore that very tab group (if necessary) and automatically be placed in them. That way, I wouldn't have to do the grouping manually over and over again.

Beware: It's not the same as workspaces. Workspaces would force me to open all bookmarks of a group, not only one.

Making moves

I like the general idea but I foresee some difficulties as written.

I'm not sure that a tab remembers the bookmark which might have spawned it. Furthermore, one might open a bookmark in a tab but then navigate to other locations within the site or to other sites altogether. If I add a tab to a tab group, is Firefox expected to update the most recent bookmark opened in this tab? What if the url domain has changed? What does it mean for a url domain to change? Should images.blah.com be considered equivalent to account.blah.com? What if I want some reddit subs to belong to one group and other subs to belong to another?

It might be easier for users and for implementers to add a new "Tab Group" field added to the bookmark definition panel. If a tab is bookmarked, then include its tab group, if any, to the definition.

Then, when a bookmark with a defined tab group is opened:

  • If the current tab is already in a tab group, then the value is ignored. The bookmark is opened in the current tab group. (I suppose the decision to ignore the defined tab group could be controlled by a new Setting.)
  • If the current tab is not already in a tab group, add the tab to the bookmark's specified tab group and open the link. If the bookmark's tab group does not already exist, it will be created with this tab as its initial member.

Another complicating factor is that Firefox permits multiple tab groups with the same name. I consider this a bug and hopefully it will be fixed. But as it stands today, opening a tab in a group is not well defined.

Finally, I would like the ability to define a Default tab group so that all tabs belong to a group. This will let me collapse all the miscellaneous tabs and make the other tab groups more evident. (Yes, I often have a huge number of tabs open and I like that I can do that!)

You got a point there, @KeithHanlan. A setting would meet “my” needs just as fine, and you'd have more granular control over what's happening. Very good suggestions there.
