Choose how Firefox handles the files you download from the web.

With version 98.0 the saving of .exe files won't ''ask me'' if i want to save the file like in previous versions.I read that the default saving attitude now is auto-saving. I have changed to ''always ask'' most of my content type like it was before, but the .exe type is missing. Please fix this on next version because a misclick - autosaving a .exe file can make things pretty bad. I have tried finding the ''Old Firefox'' folder in order to replace my old prefs.js but i guess newer versions have stopped using that folder.So please fix it.

I agree. Please bring back the old option. 

My usecase: I often download large ZIP files, select the "Open with ..." option, then extract the contents.

The way it is now, I have to manually delete the downloaded archive every single time, which gets old fast - especially when said archives are several gigabytes large.

With the previous system I could just leave the timely deletion of the archives saved to %TEMP% to the OS.

In addition to that, my Downloads folder is now getting cluttered beyond belief. Frustrating as hell.

Although I fear that this option will be removed in time, since it is only in about:config and not official.

I don't mind that Mozilla changed the default. I noticed it in the Release Notes that it said, '"Always Ask" download actions would be reset' so, after update, I went to re-configure them how I need them to be. Didn't work. Likewise, none of the workarounds suggested so far revert the old functionality, just pieces of it (it restores the location prompt but not the "what do you want to do" prompt). I need Firefox to always ask what to do with a file and where to save it. Has anyone figured out how to do this yet? If not, my only option is to use another browser until this functionality is restored. I cannot take the productivity hit this change requires.

Does Mozilla have no UX people? Or did the dev team just ignore their advice? I doubt they would have supported this. It's one thing to make the simple flow aimed at your average user the default. But removing all control from even power users is MSIE-style UX circa 2001.

The "Settings" UI has not even been updated to reflect this change. The settings shown under "Files and Applications" (both "Downloads" and "Applications") are not honored and are misleading. Any "Content Type" setting set to "Always Ask" is ignored. I need "always ask" to always ask what to do with a file, not just always ask where to save it. Hopefully someone figures out how to do this soon so I can switch back to my preferred browser before the least bad alternative becomes my preferred browser.

The solution suggested by Ujudkma only restores the download location prompt. It does not fix the missing "what do you want to do" prompt.

One of the (many) reasons i prefer Firefox over Chrome is that Chrome forces me to download any file i only want to open. Just saying...

I need to view PDF documents with an external browser or download and keep it for my work. Therefore I use the setting "always ask, what to do". My public download folder is "C:\Downloads" and at the end of the day I have nearly 100 documents stored and cannot decide, which one I need to keep and which one I can delete. Up to the current FF version I only had expected documents in the download folder and all other in the Temp, where they are deleted automatically by firefox, when the defined limit of space is reached. Here also documents from my online banking are stored temporarily and therefore the TEMP directory is on an encrypted drive. Now everything is mixed up in the download folder.

Please revert your changes so that everything, what is viewed, is stored in the TEMP folder and everything, what explicitly was downloaded, goes to the download folder.

I think, a good solution could be a simple dialogue like in Vivaldi, where you can choose whether you want to save (“Save”) a file in the last used location or if you want to select another one (“Save As …”).

.torrent files are set in the default applications settings in windows. Why would you remove that from firefox and force a download of the file instead of opening an application?

At the very least add a settings toggle to turn off the auto open panel function.  it's REALLY annoying and had I known it would be a thing I would have stuck with the previous version of Firefox for as long as possible.

Agreed,  having to manually close the intrusive download tray pop-up is very annoying and had I known it would be a "feature" of the new version of the browser I would have avoided updating for as long as possible.
