I would add a 3rd option to that list: switch to Vivaldi!

I did, and it is AWESOME. No more bubble tabs, no more psychedelic gradients, no more weird UI stuff...I set my appearance to rectangles only (no rounded corners at all), and straight black/white/gray color palette. It looks and functions exactly like a browser should - unobtrusive, invisible, just sitting there in the background serving up webpages like it's supposed to.

The new Firefox design lands in today. This is what you can expect

Firefox has evolved significantly over the past year and now, its look has evolved too.

The design begins rolling out today, with Firefox 157, bringing a cleaner, more cohesive , and more adaptable experience. It is still the Firefox you know and trust, with the same commitment to independence, privacy, customization, and user control.

The Mozilla Connect community has helped shape this work from the beginning by sharing feedback on the early designs, tested the experience in Nightly starting in July, filed bugs, and shared with us what worked and what didn’t.

Here’s what landed today.

A cleaner, more cohesive design

Softer tab shapes

Redrawn icons that hold up better across light and dark themes

Rebalanced spacing throughout the interface

A refreshed color palette featuring the glow of the active tab, deeper purples, and warmer light tones

The updated design brought bolder color choices to Firefox — and your feedback made clear that opinions on browser color run the full spectrum. In response, we created additional themes, accessible through add-ons and a new theme picker off Firefox Home, so you have greater control over how Firefox looks.

More ways to make Firefox yours

Firefox is becoming more customizable, giving you more ways to shape the browser around how you browse. These options include:

A new theme picker in the customization panel on the Firefox Home page. Additional community themes remain available through about:addons.

New Firefox themes and wallpapers

A dedicated space to pin and organize shortcuts so sites you use all the time stay put.

Compact Mode for a denser browsing experience

Compact mode now officially supported!

Compact Mode is now available as its own dedicated setting. It will also switch on automatically on smaller screens, reducing the space between interface elements so more fits on the screen.

This is one of the clearest examples of how community feedback shaped Nova. Many of you told us that maintaining a denser interface was important, and we listened.

Faster performance

The refreshed experience also includes improvements to Firefox’s startup, page-loading, and scrolling speeds.

Frequently asked questions

Will my existing themes and add-ons continue to work?

Themes and add-ons should continue to work. Nova is built on the same Firefox foundation, and the extension and theming architecture has not changed.

Will my userChrome.css customizations continue to work?

Some customizations may require minor adjustments, depending on how closely they rely on element names or layout structures from the previous interface.

But keep in mind that Mozilla does not officially support customizations made through userChrome.css. They can cause unexpected behavior or even break Firefox, and future updates may affect them as Firefox continues to evolve. If you choose to use userChrome.css, please proceed carefully.

You can learn more in Firefox advanced customization and configuration options.

Can I opt out of the update?

The new Firefox design becomes the default experience starting with Firefox 157. However, you have several ways to adjust how Firefox looks and feels, including Compact Mode, themes, wallpapers, and New Tab customization.

Keep shaping Firefox with us

Nova may be shipping today, but the work doesn’t stop here. Many of these updates grew directly from the bugs you filed and the conversations you started while the design was being developed.

Update to Firefox 157 to try the refreshed experience, then let us know what works well and what could still be improved. Your feedback will continue to help shape what comes next.

I don't like this rounded corner design. It looks very uncomfortable and awkward. I hope the square tab design can be changed back, or at least allow us to choose.

I am really not a fan of this UI refresh. The color bars added by multi-account containers look super awkward now, but even if that were not the case, this design iteration feels much less polished than the previous one. I wish I could go back.

Hi Mozilla. In the new look in the v157.0 stable release, the "Bookmarks" in the side-panel is broken: when you switch to the "Bookmarks" section, there is no down-arrow / down-chevron to change section again:

To fix this, type about:config in the web-address bar, then press ENTER. Accept any warning, if shown. Type updatedb into the search box, and you should see sidebar.updatedBookmarks.enabled appear. Double-click that line to change it from "false" to "true". The down-arrow should then be back!

Not a fan of the new UI changes. The rounded corners look off, and having a color gradient added to the default Dark Mode Theme is distractingly annoying. I cannot find how to disable the color gradient. At the very least the new changes should be it's own separate theme, and the old look could be a 'Classic' theme if you insist upon the changes.

Not sure what OS you use, but assuming Windows, you could download the ESR release of Firefox from here (https://www.firefox.com/en-GB/download/all/desktop-esr/), the latest being 153.4.0, uninstall your current Firefox, then install that one. That will then reverse the change, and I believe will get updates until next October.

You may want to check if you use any new features introduced between then (in Firefox versions 154, 155 and 156), as you'll obviously lose those in the 153 ESR, as the ESR releases only get security updates and bug-fixes after release, but rarely any new features

I agree that forcing themes down our throats to make developers feel better is trash. If you're going to make themes, they should be optional. I would much rather developers spend their time and effort on performance rather than trying to make stuff look pretty. How much revenue was wasted on color design over performance updates?

I know, to think of some of the stuff they could be improving:

Make it so "Fix major site issues and "Fix minor site issues" actually work -- currently embedded YouTube videos rarely work for me on many sites

Revisit the "Privacy and Security" section in the recently-revamped Settings UIs, as it's a mess of endless sub-screens

Allow the exporting of bookmarks in the Android version to a HTML file, as both Brave and Vivaldi offer

Improve the site bookmarking experience, so you can edit the URL when you click the star on the Location Bar (as Chromium browsers all allow)

Make it so we can disable certain Tracking Protections, like trackers, on a per-site basis, rather than the current "everything blocked, or nothing" on/off approach

Make "Check spelling" actually stay on, and not randomly turn-off at times

Improve the UI for bookmarks in the Android version: I'd prefer an Opera-style Speed Dial, where it is laid-out like a homescreen within the app, not desktop-style lists

Improve the "Firefox Home" screen so news stories can be dismissed easier, and entire sites (not just categories) could be blocked

Probably more I could think of, but you get the idea: there are definitely areas I wish Mozilla would focus more-on than the look of the browser

This update is objectively worse, relying on thin lines which clutter the ui. Preexisting themes have been overridden, and switching back to them reveals just how difficult it can now be to tell which tab is selected. Furthermore, there's no reason to add ambiguity between tabs and buttons, a change which permeates across the browser and its settings. If you're going to keep copying other browsers, you might as well copy the right things from them.

Sorry for the swaring, but that was the toned down version for the utter failure you delivered about an hour ago onto my PC: **bleep** That **bleep** and get it out of my view. That utter garbage on design completely shot my profiles for rolling back to a usable Version (156, thanks) and took me over half an hour to fix. The last browser that did not look like utter **bleep**, destroyed. Thanks for nothing

Take your Vibe coded **bleep**stain from my download history (and it does not get any better in 158 version) and slap it to whoever approved it. Maybe **bleep** on their desk also as a deodorante as that will smell less than that utterly useless, garbage and completely counterproductive update which just makes Firefox useless and just running along until I get set up a DNS filter on network level. Firefox is as of 157 the only one using Manifest v2 for uBlock and thats it. If I wanted **bleep** design I would use Chrome, and even they did it better.

I don't need half my screen used up with fat Tab bar and Browser-Header. This is PC, not some Granparents-phone with extra large buttons because the 2 year old toddler and grandparents with their +10 glasses cant hit them. Even your mute/close buttons are still old size, so why change the height of tabs? Why make them round and using about double the amount of sapce in every direction?
Why do I have to have suddenly some bright colors? Where is my solid dark theme I specifically selected? And why can'T I re-install it? Take that **bleep**ing Lightshow and stuff it up someones ass so I don't have to see it!

I didn't even get to test performance as the forced theme change completely destroyed the usability. **bleep** off with that **bleep**

For anyone who doesn't like this change, you have two options:

Easiest: in the web-address bar, type about:config then press ENTER. Accept a warning, if shown. In the search-box, type nova then look for a line with "browser.nova.enabled" in it and double-click to change the value from "true" to "false"

Harder: go to https://www.firefox.com/download/all/desktop-esr/ and download the latest ESR release (153.4.0, at this time). Go into the Settings screen in Firefox, then Account and Synchronisation, and use the Backup option to backup your current bookmarks, passwords and history. Uninstall Firefox 157.0, and restart your PC after. Once back on, install the Firefox ESR 153.4.0 you downloaded. Once done, start that Firefox up. If your bookmarks, passwords and history aren't there, go into the Settings, back to the Account and Synchronisation screen, and use the "Restore" option.

Firefox ESR only gets security-updates and bug-fixes, but not new features. So using that version, you won't get the updated UI until support for it ends (October 2027, from what I can find online).

I'm on the Internet 60-70 hrs. a week to get new experiences from the websites I visit and maintain. Not from the browser itself. I like the focus on privacy and the containers feature. Everything else only distracts me from my own core business. I loose a productive hour each month disabling stuff that I never asked for and finding alternatives for useful features that got destroyed.

Firefox and Thunderbird are the tools I need and use more than anything else, but I am not allowed to pay for it, be a customer and get support instead of being dependent on a volunteer forum. I'd pay $ 100,- a year for a version without all this en**bleep**tification. And $ 200 if it includes a sync server that I can run in my own Docker container.

Out of touch company forces UI changes on a group of users who's entire reason for using the tool is that they don't care what it looks like.

I get you want to get a bigger market share but your market is users who know what they are doing and don't want change nor do they want it to look like Chrome. Cater to those who actually use the **bleep** thing, not the imaginary users you don't have. This refresh isn't doing anything to move anyone over.

yeah so, the horror on my face when I opened firefox today and it looked like THAT, I was worried I got some virus or something, but nope, for some reason, firefox is now doing the same **bleep** Chrome did, making the browser a visual nightmare to use. like what is that? why do my tabs have a bright gradient on them? why is there a gradient from one side to the other? why are all my tabs blurring together? and the homepage with all my frequented sites on it looks even worse, like contrast for elements? a visually appealing design? nope, have this trash. like what happened to UI contrast design theory? and then oh, ok, sure there's the customize tab, I can pick a different theme, but oh wait, none of the available designs fixed it! no, I had to go into the config and disable this 'nova' thingy.
this is a complete disgrace of an update, how incredibly rude to do this to your users, this is the exact reason I left Chrome, yes, chrome, the more popular browser, it was for doing stuff like this, making the UI a mess, making the colors and tabs horrible, and constantly bothering me with changes, and making me have to go into the fudging config to fix it, and oh you're gonna remove that setting soon aren't you? just like Chrome.
well, I have news for you, I switched browsers once do to this, and so help me I will switch again if this keeps up, so please, roll this back, issue an apology, and tell whatever higher up who thinks this was a good idea to quit it

It’s an awful Decision to replace the Design with this Version of Nova in the stable Version of Firefox.

Nova still has many ugly Spots that scream “under Construction”, and the promised Option to set a custom Amount of Roundness for Firefox UI Elements is still not here.

Nova will need another Year of User Feedback and Design Changes before it’s good. And stop overloading it with useless Metaphors like Fire and Light.

In the Meantime, i have frozen Firefox stable to Version 156 on my Linux Desktop.

Agree.

They've been chasing chrome for years and haven't gained anything. They aren't going to claw back marketshare by rounding some edges and adding gradients. They need to realize there's a growing sector of internet users who want to go BACK to when things worked. When a company shipped a product and it just worked. Not when companies forced users to live vicariously through their development teams adderall addiction and inability to just let things be for awhile.

Firefox users aren't looking for Chrome they are looking for Firefox circa 2003 but with performance increases. Block ads, block trackers, block AI, and let us use the internet how WE WANT TO USE THE INTERNET! Quit making decisions for us Mozilla!

I have to disagree here - Even though I'm of the same mind regarding the redesign as apparently everyone here, I think it's fine to try new things, just don't force it on us as if we were French geese.

Why not add an immediately documented and obvious way to switch back? There already is a "What's new" landing page with lots of available space. Could even combine it with immediate "Feedback" feature (Just ask first and anonymise?). Then they'd know how popular it is - Maybe my opinion is even wrong and the vast majority of users love the new design!

I hate the new tab look. It disgusts me. Since switching to Firefox years ago, I've had a good experience but now I'm looking at other browsers because the appearance is now offensive to my eyes. Not to mention the random colored crap. I'm under 25, so my eyes work fine, but who thought "What if we made it harder to tell what tab you're in?" I bothered to sign in and make a username just to let you know how much I hate this.

Worst thing ever. I can't see the edges of anything, all the tabs blend into the bar if I don't have them selected, ans I'm having a hard time seeing things in general now, and I'm not allowed to change it back.

If you're going to make changes, don't automatically switch to them, let people effing decide for themselves.

Please make nova an option and respect Dark Mode that users chose to use.

My eyes almost imploded after the new update and after using Firefox since 1.07 this was the first time I sincerely considered moving away from it.

Thanks to some users in this thread, not Mozilla, I have set browser.nova.enabled to false from the config options and I can now use my browser without my eyes bleeding all of a sudden.

I'm sorry but this update is painful to use. I can get behind modernizing design, but this is simply a step too far. The previous design was already very modern and clean. A browser, much like an operating system, should be designed to be invisible, get out of your way, and let you do your work. I personally think the corner radii are a step too far, but there are too many egregious accessibility violations that are not subjective. Container tab indicators overlap tab titles and favicons, highlighted URL bar suggestions have very little contrast with the background, and I can't find a theme without a gradient. I'm glad that the redesign can be disabled with config and hope that this option does not go away. I urge the team to continue focusing on simplicity and reliability, not flashy design and AI features.

Why rounded corners? For 20 years the browser had rectangle - no need to change it. If you want options add options I do not want rounded tabs - waste of time of developers. Wrong, change it back or give options. With these changes Firefox makes it harder and harder to use it. You are chasing new users who wont come but pushing long time user away.

Why should users hack their own browser, profiles, power users use more than one profile and hack each of them to make Firefox regular again? Such option must be in UI and change optional. not this. This is wrong.

They seem not to want users. I though with new management "unwise" changes would stop, unfortunately not needed changes for changes sake continue. Bad. Very bad. Joke of a changes to UI, no rounded tabs, no colorful - how to you call it, the upper thing between web adress and the top. No. No. No. No. Waste of developer time, money, resources. If you must make such changes optional. My patience with Firefox is lower and lower by every such not needed unwise update. And I am long time user!

Exactly, do not change what works. No need to redesing the wheel, no need to reinvent the wheel. No need to redesign tabs in Firefox. And the gradient is annoying too. It is browser not a fashion accesory, it is a tool.

Please take it back. Bring back rectangle tabs as have been since the begining of time with Firefox and its previous name. One of the worst UI changes, the worst UI change in FF. There have been some, but this is annoying, no needed, distracting. Simply no. Please roll it back. Make it optional. This is driving me away from this version of Firefox. The gradient too. Please. Please Please. Please. Pretty please. Please!

Not a fan of the changes in Firefox' UI decisions in recent months at all. Never before did I have to jump through so many hoops, or worse, install old, non-supported browser versions (mobile) to not be harassed with your UI changes.

Either it's useless busywork, changes made for the sake of making changes, whether people want or not, without improving anything - just to look different than yesterday. The ugly rounded corners or pointless theme changes where anybody could use user themes instead would fall into that category.

Or it's outright making the browser actively worse. The changes to the dedicated search bar, or the dreadful mobile redesign of the menu and tabs tray which are design and ergonomical nightmares would fit that part.

Please, just stop. Sit down. Reconsider. Think about what actually improves your product, and what's just being done so UI designers aren't bored. This used to be the browser I could recommend everybody to use, both in terms of design, customisability, and privacy. I'd like to be able to return to the state, because gods below have you guys lost your way in the whole design and usability department.

And for all that's good, please DO NOT REMOVE the browser.nova.enabled flag in about:config. You've had a track record recently of removing such options, and it's just incredibly arrogant and hostile to the user who you've already had jumping through such hoops to revert awful changes.

I just received version 157.0. I like the new design except for the history sidebar; it automatically expands today and yesterday history. It also only shows the last 90 days (July). I guess you decided to follow Chromium, One the reasons like Firefox was that it showed history for 6 months. I hope you bring that feature back.

The new design makes it harder for me to look at the tab groups. They take too much space each, whereas the previous, more rectangular, tab groups were easier to read through as they resemble a single line of text with highlighter, instead of separate bubbles with words in them.

It's not a cleaner design. rounded corners on tabs with rainbow border around the selected tab has increased cognitive load of firefox for something that didn't need improvement or fixing.

One of the few reasons why I always preferred Firefox over other browsers is squared tabs. This update made it look like cheap Chrome knockoff and the tab playing sound icon is also low res. Thankfully it can be disable in the config.

This quote does NOT reflect the reality of Firefox: "More modern. More flexible." But this part does: "Still Firefox." (That is, same old out of date browser than STILL can't open the Bookmarks Library in a tab).

Mozilla has put all kinds of effort into enhancing Profiles and the UI but still Bookmarks Library opens in a separate window. It is such a PITA to try to manage multiple windows with different Profiles when the Bookmarks Library opens in a separate window also.

I would give up the entire new UI if Firefox could open its Bookmarks Library in a tab.

Open Bookmarks Library in a tab!!! C'mon Mozilla!!!

I hate the rounded corner tabs that have a red outline. It looks like there's an error on that tab. Please go back to the current tab just being highlighted in white.

Is there an option to switch to a “legacy” UI? I mean a Proton-like one, or better a Photon-like? Would be nice.

This new UI is objectively terrible. I don't like the rounded corners or how everything has multiple colors instead of simply one color across the entire UI. The new UI looks worse and is uglier and more distracting than the previous UI. What was the point of this? Why make it worse than it was before?

Yeah, my dude. I mean, I was going to say more, but I just kind of wanted to say something real quick. I don't know how they couldn't have noticed that the reaction to the UI was terrible from the testers. I installed a test build of what the next Firefox was going to be saying that there was going to be new UI, and I was like my God this is terrible It gave me a headache It genuinely made the browser slower, and I could actually feel it I went into about config to disable all the flashy BS that they added and then all of a sudden it felt snappier and more responsive so all it is bloat with no usefulness I don't know how the **bleep** they pretty much were like yeah this is good this is how it should be.

Is there any permanent way to revert this terrible new UI (besides reverting to version 156.0, staying there indefinitely, and turning off automatic updates, which I don't want to do because of the lack of future security updates/bug fixes)? As you said in some of your other comments here, Mozilla might remove the config option to revert the Nova UI eventually. I don't want to deal with the new look at all, whether tomorrow or a year from now. I've set the config option to false and it seems to be working completely fine (for now, at least), but if I have to use the garbage new UI, it would make Firefox borderline unusable for me.

This update is ridiculous. I don't want rounded tabs or stupid two tone borders. I want flat black simple block tabs like I had it before.

If i wanted to change it, i'd of changed it. Give me back my old settings or ima uninstall this horsesh**
