This summer, we’re temporarily giving eligible Firefox users more flexibility with the built-in VPN: unlimited bandwidth and expanded location options from now through August 31. This limited-time upgrade is designed to give you more room to use built-in VPN during a season when many people are browsing away from their usual networks. Whether you’re traveling, using public Wi-Fi at an airport, hotel, cafe, or event, or connecting from another shared network, unlimited bandwidth and more location options can help you keep browsing in Firefox with an added layer of privacy and flexibility. Here’s what’s changing, what happens after the offer ends, and how to keep using unlimited VPN access year-round with Mozilla VPN.

From now through August 31, eligible Firefox users with access to the built-in VPN will get:

Unlimited bandwidth - Use built-in VPN without the usual 50 GB monthly bandwidth limit.

More locations to browse from - Choose from an expanded set of countries, giving you more flexibility while browsing.

There is no action needed. All eligible users will get this summer upgrade automatically.

Unlimited bandwidth and expanded locations are available only for a limited time. The summer VPN offer runs through August 31. Starting September 1, the built-in VPN will return to 50 GB per month, and a set of 5 locations. Similar to the summer upgrade, this change will happen automatically.

What if a website does not work as expected while using the VPN?

Some websites may behave differently when a VPN is turned on. For example, a site may load slowly, show an error, ask for additional verification, or limit access from VPN connections. If that happens, you can try changing your VPN location, refreshing the page, or turning off the VPN for that site.

What if I want unlimited VPN bandwidth and more locations all the time?

For users who want unlimited bandwidth, access to more locations, and VPN protection across more devices, we also offer Mozilla VPN, our paid VPN product.

Mozilla VPN includes:

Unlimited bandwidth

300+ locations to browse from

Support for up to 5 devices

And more!

You can learn more about Mozilla VPN here.

Thanks for trying built-in VPN this summer!

We hope these temporary upgrades to built-in VPN make your browsing a bit more private during a season when many people are traveling, using public Wi-Fi, or just browsing from places outside the norm.

Whether you’re on a shared network at the airport, hotel, cafe, or event Wi-Fi, built-in VPN can help add an extra layer of privacy and security whenever you’re browsing in Firefox.

Amazing update. However a little feedback regarding the feature, while the selective VPN (which you turn off VPN for specific sites) is very helpful for some, however not for me as I have the opposite problem. I would love to have a secondary "Blacklist" in tandem to the current "Whitelist" system, which allows me to use VPN only when I access certain, rather than all sites, and the VPN stays off otherwise due to my usage for this VPN will mostly used for circumvent social media geolocating that you can't opt out of.

There is a big design issue with Firefox VPN.

It does not work when DOH is enabled and it took me a while to get it by trial and error.

I would expect two options here:

1. rise an alert with the VPN gets engaged and the DOH is set, informing the user the two features cannot be used in the same time so one must be disabled.

2. automatically disengage DOH when the VPN is engaged and re-engage it when the VPN is disengaged (or the opposite).

I don't know if this makes me sad or mad. Besides I don't imagine how this "feature" passed through the beta testing and got to the general public, it seems the issue has been known for a month, already patched for the next release BUT I had to discover it on my own because first the VPN wasn't available in my country, then out of the blue it gets pushed and I found it in the top bar and it is advertised on the Web but there isn't any "known issues" appendix. Not the end of the world of course.

That's a fair question. Transparency around logging practices is important whenever a third-party provider is handling network traffic. While contractual commitments and privacy policies can provide some assurance, many users would like to see more technical details or independent audits to verify how data is handled in practice. For those interested in additional resources and information, I found this useful reference: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Luj4e30CNlbox3n4yB50H7Xt90gWX7-Mco7CbUixQJY/edit?usp=sharing.

This is a fair strategic move from Mozilla which I approve and it's well needed. When I had a conversation about Browsers among my friends we kinda all agree that Firefox is fading away because of QoL features exactly like this one. (And important promotions).

Do your friends know basically there are only two "browsers" left?

One is Firefox and the other is Chrome.

Anything else (es. Brave, Vivaldi) is a mod of Chrome/Chromium, which says something.

I would say that the current situation is more or less the same as back when there was Netscape and Internet Explorer, even worse because there was also Opera (not today's Opera, the real one). Firefox (it wasn't called Firefox yet) was born from the ruins of Netscape and could become an alternative to Internet Explorer because it gained a strong community among "power users" who then became "evangelists" and spread this "new alternative browser" among the general public.

In my opinion todays Firefox struggles because it moved away from the "power users" community and the general public doesn't have reasons to pick Firefox instead of Chrome (or any of its mods). For the same reasons they did not have reasons to pick "the new browser" instead of Internet Explorer back then.

Yes, they are aware of what you are mentioning (But obviously lacks better understanding or insight). And I agree, Firefox is actually the only real browser among the big Power Corporations. And it 'does' feel better to know that my real data is in Mozilla's hands rather than let's say Google's.

But it's not enough, something needs to bring up the attention for/by Firefox again like the Internet Explorer days. Small things like built-in VPN is maybe not essential but it's a step towards offering "same" feature's other known Browsers have had for too long while Firefox has been way too behind.

While im not the best at discussions, I want to highlight that using YouTube-promotions or "TikTok" promotions isn't really the best to reach a more serious crowd that might want to involve themself in e.g. bugzilla reporting. I think Mozilla needs to be more "oldschool" and try make School's and other necessities depend on it in a more nicer way. (e.g.) Your Data Is Valued.

Thank you!
