Call for Participation: What does Firefox sound like to you?

Hey all,

We’re building a small library of branded sounds for Firefox — think notification tones, logo sounds, and other audio moments that could live inside the product and across our marketing.

Who better to inspire us than the people who know Firefox best?

We’d love for you to share a sound you’ve made, found, or simply love. A sound that, to you, captures the spirit of Firefox. You can submit your idea through this form and it could shape the audio identity of the browser you love.

A few things to keep in mind:

Any sound is welcome. We don’t have rules on style or genre
No IP-protected sounds (e.g. a copyrighted song or audio clip you don't own)
Keep it under one minute
Submissions are open until April 15

Once we've collected everything, your submissions will serve as inspiration for the branded sounds our team creates.

Feel free to spread the word with your local community and friends. The more voices (and sounds!), the better.

What would a Firefox sound like? Not sure that I can help with that aspect.

But if requests for specific sound events are allowed, then I think that Firefox really needs a beep of some kind for when either a download has completeed, or when one has failed.

Also would be good is a sound for when all current downloads have finished, if someone doesn't want to hear a success beep for each individual one.

Another request, please give users an on/off toggle for each specific sound event, as well as the option to choose their own custom sounds, and the volume at which they play. Thanks.

What do you think of using variations of a similar sound for a notification et cetera?
E.g. I was told that you should have at least 5 different sounds for footsteps in a video game. Otherwise it would sound and feel like a clock.
Perhaps, if there are variations of a sound, it wouldn't get that annoying after some time. (I'm thinking of my e-mail notification sound that I've heard a thousand times.) I believe this would make the effect of the sound feel a little more alive and "real".

Not easy to answer but please consider natural sounds that are not stressful like:

Elements (drop of water...)
Animals (owl, cricket, frog, cat...)
Music instruments (Tibetan singing bowl, gong, xylophone, triangle, piano... if played gently)

For Firefox on Android, I would have the sound of a cow defecating, every time the new menu opened.

Also, low, lumbering, heavy footsteps, whilst scrolling through the new tab layout UI.

That's so cute!

Do you know Skype sounds? They have the most pleasant sounds, like a droplets of water dripping but also add some "notification" vibe into it. Sadly Skype is gone.

So I would love to hear a combination of Skype sounds + Fox cute sounds. It should have a fresh, aero, aqua, limpid, lovely vibe.

And a music Fire Fox .mp3 or some music video on Youtube would be awesome

I cannot remember the 'meaning' for all of every beep, boop, pingbong, jiggle, & jingle from the dozens of apps fighting for my attention. I would love to have the option of recording my own (or synthesized) voice to say the purpose or meaning of the cue, or at least read out the notification prompt.
I can't imagine I'm the only user with this need, and Firefox could lead the way for all of the other less thoughtful apps.

That’s such a nice vibe idea 😄

Mixing those soft, watery Skype-style tones with cute fox sounds would sound really fresh and calming. You could probably find something close by searching for “aqua notification sounds” or “cute animal ambient mix” on YouTube.

I like the idea of it sounding like a combination of natural sounds (river water crashing on rocks, wind rustling tree leaves, soft waves on a beach, soft bird chirpings, maybe even a frog croacking) with a handpan.

Like an ethereal forest kind of sound.

I know you said you can't use protected IP, but if ever a soundbite and an action were destined to be together, it would be Nelson Muntz saying "Haw! Haw!" and your accidentally-delete-a-saved-URL-in-a-collection-by-moving-your-finger-slightly-less-than-vertical-while-scrolling-with-no-prompt-before-deleting-and-no-convenient-way-to-undo-the-action feature in the Android app.

Yes, I know this is not the place to suggest design changes. Yes, I have already given feedback at the thread where other users are complaining about this ridiculously annoying flaw. (I accidentally deleted two saved URLS today already.)

No, I do not care how Firefox should sound, because I DON'T WANT FIREFOX TO SOUND LIKE ANYTHING. As soon as you introduce this "innovation," I will look for the switch to disable it. I often stream music while browsing. Why in the world would I want Firefox to interrupt with extraneous noises?
