If that doesn't happen, could you double-check that "Zoom text only" is not checked?

If the problem is only on one site, it could be that the site uses a responsive style sheet to modify sizing at different resolutions. Higher zoom levels are perceived as lower resolution and can trigger a mobile layout, for example.

Windows' "Make text bigger" accessibility setting affecting UI in Firefox v103

Make the feature switchable! The new combined scaling of text and UI is horrible!

It was OK in previous versions of Firefox. I have 125% font size in Windows settings. The text was big and UI was normal.

Now the UI just eats 25% more space of the desktop. It's not ergonomic and absolutely useless.

For now, rolling back to v102 and disabling updates.😤

V 103.0 came out today, and I find that the result is that all web sites are far too big! I find that I must scale them down to restore the original size.

Update 103.0 introduces the following change
- " Windows' "Make text bigger" accessibility setting now affects all the UI and content pages, rather than only applying to system font sizes. "
This change is not useful, as windows already has two separate settings for customizing the UI of windows.
Windows has a "Make Everything Bigger" setting for exactly this. Switching it to scale off "Make Text Bigger" is an annoying change and makes firefox look very claustrophobic.

I did the upgrade, too. Surprise, the screens are waaay too large, especially the bookmarks bar. I looked around the "Help" section and found one of the responses from a developer was basically "tough luck", there's no way to go back. So I'm dumping Firefox and find another browser.

I have text scaled up in Windows because I need it in order to read things without straining my eyes, but the list of tabs + address bar + bookmarks bar now takes up a solid 25% of my screen. I don't like it. Wish we could have an option to toggle this.

They were to large before, but now they take up to much space on my upper part of my computer. I need them smaller. I don't always want to hide the toolbars by using F11. Please fix this glitch'.

I recommend you, IT, put a new feature, for us users to access and use to customize the Customize Toolbar sizes to our preference. FYI: The Menu Bar stayed small and for me at a good size. I want my Customize Toolbar icons to be the same size as my Menu Bar words.

However, if I am not seeing where I am suppose to go, to accomplish this request, please let me know where and what I need to do.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Same here, I always managed to use windows UI and Text scaling to get the result I needed for my vision. But I guess it took Mozilla 18 years to break what wasn't broke.

I found the fix for this:

"I'm still on Firefox 102, but during the beta cycle of Firefox 103, a number of users reported that Firefox was now double-enlarging text. A new preference was just added to help control this, but I haven't experimented with it myself:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.display.os-zoom-behavior and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 0 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change. How does that look?

Available values:

0 => Ignore the OS-level scaling (historical behavior on Windows/Mac)

1 => Apply OS-level scaling as proportional zoom [default] (historical behavior on Linux)

2 => Apply OS-level scaling as text-only zoom

Please developers, make it the way it was before 103 or at least give it as an option. Please, please, please. I can't describe how troubled I've been since morning after I have upgraded to 103. Please don't spoil something that was perfect. I keep Windows 11 text size to 120%, keep 'text only zoom' on in Firefox and it worked perfectly. Now all pages have become large as happens in Edge or Chrome. Twitter, Youtube, Facebook have switched to minimal layout mode to accomodate. Please revert to as it was before 103, let the webpages be at original size, we have the option of text-only or full zoom if we want that.

The workarounds might help partially. Pity, I can't test them as I have rolled back to v102 already.

But honestly, why has the change been made in first place? Didn't they tested it? It's obvious bad design decision!

Need a reverse on ( Windows' "Make text bigger" accessibility setting now affects all the UI and content pages, rather than only applying to system font sizes.) Cannot scroll with ease, cannot read a page without scrolling 3 sentences. And No control buttons to fix it.

Firefox 103 now applies the Windows "Make text bigger" setting as a zoom multiplier (Release Notes).

You may like the effect that Windows setting has in other programs, and want to keep it. BUT if it's not needed for other programs, you can reset that to 100% to resolve the issue:

Otherwise, Firefox 103 has 3 interrelated hidden settings that control the overall zoom level and whether it considers information from the system. This one seems to be working for many people to revert the change:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return.

I have similar settings in Windows (120% on text and 175% for everything) and also have this issue with the latest Firefox update. I'm having to zoom out on all of my web pages, and I'm still not sure whether they all look right. I did find a way to add additional zoom settings for Firefox so I can have more options, so I added in a 75% setting and that has seemed to help at least one web page I use frequently.

I found the info below on an old thread and was able to add 0.75 to the list of values for toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues.

You can set your own preferred zoom values via the about:config page. You can use 5% of 10% (x.05 or x.10) zoom values.

toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues

zoom.maxPercent

zoom.minPercent

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".

@jadams_503 wrote:

V 103.0 came out today, and I find that the result is that all web sites are far too big!

When I change it to 0, the fonts on the tabs are too small to read. I changed it to 2 and it seems to look better. I think I'm going to try it that way for awhile.
I also found that we can add more zoom levels to Firefox. Going from 80% down to 67% is often too much of a decrease. Before I found this thread, I found a old thread and a post mentioning the toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues setting (also under the about:config). I added a value for 0.75, and that has given me another option for zooming out. It helped at least one web page which I use frequently. But now that I've changed the setting you mentioned, I had to zoom it to 80% again.

Try to change it to 0 and then try to change the font size (to any comfortable value) in Windows system settings. That just made the trick for me, tab fonts became as they was before and UI is scaled normally.

This is one of the first updates for a web browser where I had to search for solutions and even make an account here to comment on just how bad the update is.

The proposed solution with ui.textScaleFactor might work(?) but, now people are hyper aware of the scaling and overthinking if it's as it use to be or not.

Hopefully this makes sense:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Here's what that should look like (top half of this image).

(4) Firefox should display an editing field, and show a value of 0 -- edit the value to 100 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.

(5) If the current value of ui.textScaleFactor is NOT 100, then double-click the preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 100 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.

Let us know whether that works for you -- fully, partially, or not at all.

about:config - ui.textScaleFactor - worked for me. And I wound up going with 112, not 100. My Windows display is at 125% (Recommended) and the "Make text bigger" slide scale I have set to 160. And it looks like everything is back to the way it was. And the browser.display.os-zoom-behavior is set to zero. But I'm not sure what it was before I started messing with that.

I should also point out that I use Zoom Page We extension, which sets the zoom percentages for the web pages I visit. And what was strange about all this, is that my Zoom Page We icon was also affected, it was way bigger and blurry. That too is back to normal.

What a mess. An avoidable mess. I don't know what the techies inside FF were thinking.

@TangoDwn wrote:

They really messed up this update. Everything is way out of wack. You can make adjustments in the settings but it won't save those either. Hope they fix this soon.

Actually, I don't think anything on the Settings page will help with changes to the overall scale of the browser, but just in case, what adjustments do not get saved?

More generally:

Firefox 103 now applies the Windows "Make text bigger" setting as a zoom multiplier (Release Notes).

You may like the effect that Windows setting has in other programs, and want to keep it. BUT if it's not needed for other programs, you can reset that to 100% to resolve the issue:

Otherwise, Firefox 103 has 3 interrelated hidden settings that control the overall zoom level and whether it considers information from the system. This one seems to be working for many people to revert the change:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. (See below screenshot for reference)

Some of the fonts definitely seem out-of-whack. Does it help at all to reload the page bypassing the cache? Here's what I mean. Either:

Shift+click the Reload button

Ctrl+Shift+R (or on Mac, Command+Shift+R)

Windows: Ctrl+F5

Just trying to make sure that any jumbled files in the cache aren't a factor.

If the problem continues, I suggest posting about this problem on the Mozilla Support site. They have a team of support volunteers to troubleshoot malfunctions with your currently installed version of Firefox, while this site is focused on idea submissions for future versions of Firefox (looking ahead anywhere from 8 weeks to many months). Here's a link to the new question form (for Windows/Mac/Linux): https://mzl.la/3y1vQUQ

Just get rid of the zoom multiplier for text accessibility. Why would you even change that? The whole purpose of enlarging the text is only to enlarge the text. By magnifying everything else you make the brower virtually unusable (like the other browsers).

On my computer, the recommended display setting is 125 percent. If I keep that setting and enlarge the text, the menu bars become much too large. If I reduce it to 100 percent, the icons become too small. The browser should not conform to the system display setting. That's the whole point of making it customizable and it was one of Firefoxes best features!

Firefox 103 now applies the Windows "Make text bigger" setting as a zoom multiplier on top of "Make everything bigger" (Release Notes).

You can experiment with the Windows settings (pictured here) but assuming you want to keep those, scroll down past this screenshot:

Firefox 103 has 3 interrelated hidden settings that control the overall zoom level and whether it considers information from the system.

Another update: After coming back to my laptop tonight I don't think the fonts are still exactly the way they used to be. This work-around helps a lot but I don't think it's exactly the way it was before. One tweak that can help with the zoom is that I found earlier today that you can add more default zoom levels. In about:config, search for toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues. You can then add more values to tweak the zoom levels. I added .85 (85%) and .95 (95%) and may add more if I feel I need to do more tweaking.

103.0 is causing me two strange issues. 1. Tabs are too large - stretching twice their normal width. 2. Until I changed it in settings, Everything was zoomed at 120%. This was very odd. Not life breaking but pretty jarring. I am not savvy enough to go chasing down all the changes, can we all just agree to let some things be standard?

If that doesn't happen, could you double-check that "Zoom text only" is not checked?

If the problem is only on one site, it could be that the site uses a responsive style sheet to modify sizing at different resolutions. Higher zoom levels are perceived as lower resolution and can trigger a mobile layout, for example.

Pity, I can't test them as I have rolled back to v102 already.

But honestly, why has the change been made in first place? Didn't they tested it? It's obvious bad design decision!

I'm sure the answer to "why" the change was made is out there somewhere, but the question about why this wasn't picked up in testing is more complicated. There are a lot of beta testers, but I suspect they tend to have more standardized setups, and are more self-sufficient (nerdy?) when it comes to finding and implementing about:config changes on Reddit. As a result, some problems that appear to have a low impact during testing turn out to be a bigger issue after release. The standard release user base uses Firefox on a huge range of equipment, from lower resolution laptops to higher-than-HD screens, from basic RGB to finely calibrated displays, and with low-end graphics to state-of-the-art. I don't think the beta test population does or can fully reflect the regular user population, so this is going to keep happening.

In a perfect world, Firefox would have these hidden settings easily controllable from the Settings page, Appearance section. New stuff has been added there this year, which is a start, but there is more that could be done. Maybe it also would be helpful to have a resolution advisor that checks whether the zoom multiplication seems to have gone too far. I don't have a good sense of how that would be done, but maybe if the toolbar height is more than 25% of the screen the enlargement needs to be dialed back.

Every time you adjust the zoom level on a page, that new level is recorded for that site. If you use private browsing, this doesn't work because Firefox doesn't write site-specific data to disk. As a result, Firefox may forget your site zoom level in new tabs or new windows.

I tried a couple of work arounds, and it seems okay now (phew). I set browser.display.os-zoom-behavior as 0 and ui.textScaleFactor as 100.

But without the workaround, the google drive (and gmail and google doc - pretty much all google services) gets too large and I couldn't even scroll left and right to see everything. The menu to the left (and top for google doc) takes up too much space on the screen. These issues were not fixable just by zooming in and out.

It worked for me Joez and I am far from computer savvy. I don't like messing with config but following 'Making moves' post exactly, it worked. Except making toolbar icons back to their normal size, all else it now back to where it was before this horrible update.

I am curious about what the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx setting does. I'm on Windows 10, but my value for this control is set at the default setting of -1. I was wondering if it affects pictures on web pages or if it's just about the User Interface. If there is a way to make graphics a little smaller on web pages without affecting text, I would like to be able to do that. (If I use the "zoom text only" feature in the browser, it doesn't usually work correctly.) Some web pages have headers which cover 1/3 of my laptop screen, and Facebook has pictures in the news feed which are slightly larger than the browser screen (unless I use "full screen" view, and I don't want to do that; I like keeping my menu and tabs visible). This is not only in FF 103; it's been an ongoing issue. If there's a hidden setting to fix it, that would be nice! I know I could change my Windows setting for "Make Everything Bigger" to a lower setting, but that affects desktop icons, taskbar, and a lot of other things which I don't want to change. Thanks!

layout.css.devPixelsPerPx affects the whole browser (on Windows and Linux) including images, all webpages and UI elements. It's kind of like "Make everything bigger" (or smaller) but only for Firefox itself.

Yes, it worked for me, too. Someone else posted they used a different number, larger than 100, so I experimented with different numbers and found that a larger number makes my tabs and toolbar icons and text smaller, and a smaller number makes them larger. The 100 works best for me, but you might want to experiment with a smaller number if your toolbar, etc., is too small. Maybe try starting with 90 and then tweak it to your liking.
