In the Process Manager (about:performance) you can click on the X on the right to "unload tabs and kill process".That keeps the tab open but unloads it.

For some reason every tab has two entries and one has to be careful to click on the X for the one with the web-adesss, the other one will close the tab. It's very unintuitive and i wish there was a better and safer way to do it.

<LI-PRODUCT title="Firefox" id="firefox-desktop"></LI-PRODUCT> has a page unload function that helps, but implemented not very useful.

Users should be able to choose whether they want to load all pages when the browser is turned on. They should also be able to choose whether they want to have the restore all closed tabs feature enabled or to load the browser with unloaded tabs when it is turned on. It's usually a good idea to add more features to the page unloading function. It's a useful feature, but its current implementation isn't very good.
